1 | James Trafford - 2025/26

Think Trafford will start at least 20 games this season (unless we fail in the cups).
I think half of that would be pushing it to be honest, given how the manager and the players are (rightly) talking up Gigi at every opportunity. Big test for Trafford to react in the right way, I'm sure this wasn't quite what he signed up for.

Who knows?

What's clear though is that an extremely talented young keeper who may be the best keeper in all of England may very well not start enough games to make the world cup side.

Most games in the season will be against average or poor teams. Trafford will start in the cups and in some games vs bottom teams in the PL. He has started 3 games so far. Another 15 games is a distinct possibility.

Trafford won't play another PL game or a single CL game unless there's a dead rubber somehow. He's the no.2 and he'll get no.2 minutes, ie cups and covering for any injuries/suspensions.

He'll probably want to leave at the end of this season, and he'll probably go to newcastle or Chelsea or something like that. Which I'm fine with because Donnarumma is better than him, and young enough to be a long term option.

TBH I always had a conspiracy the club saw Trafford as a player to flip the whole time, given that he only cost us about 10/12 mil once you factor burnley's fee in. We'll sell him for more than that easily, probably double it

What a disgusting way to treat a young, former academy player if so.

Not convinced they did this myself but we will see.

I would have taken Dunny at any time in the last 5 years or so but I do feel for Trafford, and I was happy enough if we'd gone through with giving him the chance to be #1.

I also understand that when a transfer like that presents itself, it would be difficult to say no.

The fact he is only 26 makes it a really hard case for Trafford now; his ambitions to become England's #1 over T-Rex would have been very good if he'd been our keeper but now everything is in tatters for him.

A shame.

Played really well last night apart from 1 moment where I thought he handled the ball outside the box but replay showed he knew what he was doing and although he was standing outside the box.. the ball and his hands were in it. (never seen a keeper do that before)

Supremely confident..

Never really got in trouble except with a shot that he had no chance of stopping curved in and hit the post.

Looked ok last night but what was intially a succession plan for Ederson has switched to an opportunity to make a few quid from Trafford. Hopefully we can give him a lot of games and then sell him on for 40m in the summer. Donnurumma not even into his prime yet.

Pretty poor way to treat an academy player if that is true.

I think he’ll be gone by next summer, maybe even a loan move in January. He’s too good to sit on the bench every week and he’s already done his learning on bench previously.

It does make me question why did we buy him? He’ll probably end up at Chelsea or Newcastle and become the best keeper in the league

if i were to defend the club the GK situation was genuinely a cluster this summer. I think there was a bunch of improvisation, and I think they were right to jump on the Donnarumma signing, which only really materialised in the final weeks of the window. Trafford did get a bit hosed once it all played out, but I don't think the club made any mistakes.

The spine of the team you want to be truly world class and I think we have that now with Donna, Josko, Rodri, Phil (keep it up lad), Erling. If Doku and Khus can keep this form going they may join that list. We have the makings of a very good team.

This is why I feel Trafford is actually better for our team long term if he gets a chance.

No one will be Eddie.. but Trafford can be both be as intimidating as Donna but still have a bit of Eddie's game which would add another dimension to us.

Just hope we don't have to end up selling him since he's the best keeper we've produced in a long long time!

We need a good second keeper and why can’t we keep Trafford as you never know what happens in a season and he will get plenty of opportunities with us .
