The thing is I actually feel a bit for him, coming into a new team with teammates much superior to what you previously had, in a new system requiring more discipline in positional play than you've ever been used to and under a manager more meticulous and demanding than any you would ever play for, it can be a shock to the system. When all those are taken into consideration, you could say he's done fine and that in itself would be understandable. He is clearly more of a long-term signing than an instant impact/ game-changer one irrespective of the price tag.
The problem is through no fault of his own, he was massively overhyped prior to his signing to be something he clearly wasn't. Right from the start of the euros until his signing there have been very few players who've had the kind of hype and fervour that he had. So much to a point where he was already hailed as being a beter player than the likes of mahrez and sterling, two players who had been pivotal parts in tittle winning teams, at leicester for mahrez and two consecutive seasons for sterling. We are talking about genuine match-winners/game changers at the highest level here yet somehow when compared to grealish seemed like mid-table players. That was how ridiculous it got at times when the truth is he has a long way to go to accomplish anything close to what those two have in their careers.
Add an inflated price-tag into this mix of overhype and you have a situation where expectations fairly or unfairly gets raised to a level where he couldn't possibly live up to coming into a new side. He was never going to be a game-changer or someone to take the team to the next level like his price or the hype would dictate. He also wasn't coming into a team that was just merely good but rather one that had won 3 or the 4 previous titles so really there was much else he could add other than squad depth unless he was truly extraordinary player which he isn't. If we are being totally honest when everyone is fit and in their best form I would argue he is 5 or 6 in ranking in both the attacking and midfield roles. That is no slight on him but rather the ridiculous standards and levels that's been set the past 4 or so seasons and the quality of players.
So yes he should be given time to adjust irrespective of his price/hype coming into the club, he will most likely end up being a success in the long-term once the likes of de-bruyne/gundogan have moved on and he's had more understanding of the system and its requirements. But he should also be judged on what he's offering at the moment and currently his performances and impact certainly doesn't justify him being one of the first names on the team for me.
