If that was aimed at me, I didn't say it was Jack's fault.

We are in a Grealish thread talking about the performance of Grealish so pardon me for commenting on the performance of one player.

Couldn't care less if he cost £100 or £100m he needs to start doing the basics right. Several times tonight a pass was played to him and he was beaten to the ball by the defender behind him getting to the ball as he was stationary and on the back foot. Surely the basics of football are on the front foot and you move towards the ball when a pass is played to you.

Anyway, off to the Mahrez/Ake thread. Am I allowed to comment on their dismal performances or will I be accused of solely blaming them for tonight's shit show!
My post wasn’t aimed at anyone in particular. If it was I would have quoted or tagged you. However, if the cap fits.

The team was collectively poor last night. Not a single outfield player had a good game and yet certain posters pick out the player or players they like to hate on.

In many ways a performance like last night is useful for Pep as I would imagine the next few training sessions will be focused on reinforcing the messages that were clearly forgotten last night.

I felt like he was on autopilot today. Ball comes to me here, do a few stopovers and cross into the first defender. Ball falls to me in the box, take a half hearted shot. Lose the ball? Jog over so I'm sort of pressing.

There was no life to his performance, no thought in it.

He treated it a bit like it was a charity friendly he didn't want to be at.

And part of that is on Pep and the senior players because he should have gotten a bollocking inside 5 minutes to wake up and start playing.
He’s become very predictable, needs to take fewer touches and move the ball quicker.

The only thing that needs to be developed and isn't as good as Pep would like to - is his defending skills.

But if Cancelo and Mahrez could learn - Grealish would as well and before that, I don't think Pep will risk and play him in midfield area. Only False 9 and Winger positions..

Otherwise, there is everything what is needed from the top player.. Can't even imagine how good he will be, when he starts to shine like Cancelo or Mahrez or others started..

First of all this is not a dig at Grealish , he's a brilliant footballer worth the admission fee on his own , but i do question our recruitment because we didnt need Jack Grealish , we have four or five players who can slot into the team where Grealish has been utilised. We needed a £100-150m striker , but they were thin on the ground and with the money burning a hole in our pocket we bought Grealish , who will still when acclimatised to our tactics will make a decent contribution , but any criticism of Grealish has to be tempered we are asking him to play a false nine at times a position he has never played. Not sure what his best position in our team is because at Villa he had a free reign to cause chaos and we dont give players a free reign.
He is an expensive cog in a well oiled machine and with the quality of our playing squad he was never going to stand out head and shoulders amongst the likes of KDB , Mahrez , Foden , Gundo , Bernardo etc. Jack's issues are similar to Mahrez , a big fish in a small pond but it has worked out well for Mahrez hopefully it will for Jack as well.
