10 | Jack Grealish - 2024/25

One of the most popular threads on Bluemoon but also, IMO, the dullest.
If you support players who play for Manchester City, this thread will never be one that is easy to understand. He hasn't played recently, but still comes in for condemnation or stats posts highlighted that do just that.

It has always been a factor within our fanbase, from FFS Mahrez, to Plodri, Raheem, Edgy, Boo Bowyer, and so on. Often undeserved, and utterly dull. Opinions and constructive criticism are part of the purpose of an internet forum. Relentless negative targeting is not for me.

I hope that Jack Grealish returns to full health and form and stays as part of the decade's most successful team. Should he move on, I would offer my best wishes for the future. The hate here, and that is what it is, saddens me.

Jack hasn’t scored a goal for us in over a calendar Year, and in that time he has about two assists, Man City are a team who thrive to be the best so of course criticism is going to take place, it’s not ‘hate’ we want our players to be the best they can be it goes without saying, it’s more frustration than anything else.

He’s never fit for more than a few weeks at a time. He’s as big a crock as anyone in the squad.

How can anyone build any momentum with this kind of interrupted streak (this is his status for every City PL game played since the start of 2023-24):

Bench-started-started-injured-injured-sub3mins-sub10mins-bench-sub15mins-started-sub15mins-started-bench-sub30mins-injured-sub38mins-suspended-started-started-started-started-bench-sub13mins-bench-sub3mins-injured-injured-injured-injured-injured-sub30mins-started-started-bench-sub18mins-started-sub10mins-injured-injured-injured-bench-sub19mins-started-started-sub12mins-started-started-injured-injured-injured-sub16mins-sub11mins-started-sub4mins-sub15mins-started-unwell-bench…

He’s only started more than two consecutive games once since the treble. As a comparison, even De Bruyne who we all think of as injury ravaged and can’t get going, started 18 of City’s 23 games after he came back from injury in January to his latest injury in September, including the last 8 games of last season and the first 4 games of this season (12 PL games in a row).

In the games Grealish has started consecutively, that’s where he’s got all of his goals and assists over these past two seasons (bar one random goal against Spurs that wasn’t within a run of consecutive games).

It’s not that Grealish isn’t good enough… it’s that he’s never fit enough.

Yeah he's literally never fit to play 3 games in a row and he's also the sort of player who needs to play regularly to reach top form so we are left with what we have. It's basically the same as Eden Hazard to Madrid but at least we got 1 decent season out of Jack.

Shouldn’t get involved in the thread then really, especially if it saddens you, there will always be a scapegoat or two, but the problem that the Grealish in brigade have is they all know deep down it’s not worked out quite well here, but don’t want to admit it, as they see how nice a guy he is off the pitch.

It’s a football thing that people are pissed off about now, and it seems the manager is as well now, time for him to leave so he can get back into his beloved national squad.

The press seems to have the knives out for Jack. He has been off form at the moment but he is one of ours so let’s get behind him.
"The press"

LOL Jack Grealish is responsible for that, he has done little or nothing for months to justify any praise from anyone, including "the press"

Not scoring a single goal in a calendar year is shockingly poor for a forward player in our side.

I can see a loan move for Jack, very difficult to sell him unless to Saudi. It would be good for Jack and the club to get his career going again and for city freeing up a squad place (we will have to take a haircut on amortisation but hopefully his wages are covered)

I would say Grealish is in the last chance saloon at the very best, probably knows he is finished here and hence the speculation about Spurs/Newcastle.

He has had a shocking season and even worse coming off the back of been dropped by England for the Euros. He said all the right things in the summer, seemed motivated for the first few weeks but then reverted back to normal.

Just looking at him at the moment he doesn't look right at all, he looks half baked half the time.

Sadly I agree

I've always been a supporter of him, willing him to do well but something is lacking.

I do think the role he's asked to play at city somewhat a shackles his best attributes and freedom he had at Villa, but i don't think that's an entirely valid excuse for him because in the last half of the treble winning season he really nailed down a place in the starting 11 and showed a lot of drive and was playing really well in that position , but he hasn't showed that hunger since.

I do think it's getting close to the time for him to move on, especially if he wants to play regular football in a preferred role on the pitch. He's more than capable of going to a decent club and showing he is a very good player. I'd rather he does it for us but he's in his 4th season with us now and you can probably count on one hand how many good spells of consistent form he's had for us.
.

And all this time I thought Pep was the one who told him not to score goals, give assists, run at defenders or be in goal scoring positions, now I'm wondering where that narrative came from.

Honestly, I have to say I am a little bit confused, is Pep actually in agreement with those of us here who have been labeled "haters" of Jack? It seems like the manager actually wants a productive footballer, That's weird considering the fact that a few pages back certain users posted about stats, goals and assists not painting the complete picture, hmmm....nothing makes sense anymore.
