When he has fitness, confidence and drive (as he has this season so far), he creates an absolute shitload of chances.
I don't care how often he's the scorer, the assister, the assist before the assister, or just the bloke that the opposition double or triple up on because of his insane gravity and that opens up spaces elsewhere that other players exploit.
Whichever of those he's doing, he's doing the team a service and he's doing it well. He's a patient, selfless and positionally-disciplined player.
Like others, I think he could work on being much more clinical in front of goal when he gets those opportunities. He's clearly extremely technical and he should definitely be able to improve that area of his game.
Part of his problem I think is that he went through a dry patch and then got in his head so he shoots less, and when he does shoot he hesitates, and that makes his shots easier to block, and that provides a feedback loop telling him not to bother shooting. If he could relax, care a little less, and shoot instinctively when the opportunity arises, he would get a few more goals and that'd ease the pressure. Even if he could become just say a solid 10-goal-a-season player I think that'd ease some of the pressure, internally and externally.
But even without those numbers, when he's at his best he's incredibly important to how we play.
