10 | Jack Grealish - 2024/25

He splits opinion
I'd like to see a poll of City fans.
Before the start of the season I would say 60/40 in favour of more likes but now I would say the vast majority have lost patience with him.

This season with the injuries and issues he should be a leader in that dressing room, sadly that does not seem to be the case and he has gone MIA for whatever reason.

Nice big sponsorship deals, settled down with a new kid, City contract plus sponsors means never having to work another day in his life…are all a few “Starters for 10”

Sadly may well be true, but should he not be known for his football?

I am struggling to think of any memorable moment on the pitch in our shirt.

No-one in their right minds could ever, even possibly, suggest that Jack Grealish has lived up to either his hype or his price tag at City. However, both of those things are out of his control.

What concerns me more is that his contribution to the success of the team has been that of “non-ball loser” rather than game changer.

As a young England international, one would have expected him to kick on at City. I can find NO-ONE who thinks his City performances have been better than the Villa performances that got him a £100M transfer to the Champions.

That means, to me at least, that he has been disappointing.

I think that's a fair assessment.

I do think he was very good in the last few months of the treble season and seemed to be one of the first names on the team sheet, started all the big games. However, it's probably the only high level consistent spell he's had in 3 seasons.

But then he hasn't got the freedom of the pitch he was given at Villa. I do think that's a factor. I just don't think his attributes lend itself to the role he's asked to play at City. He'll do a job there because he's a good and clever player, but I don't think he can excel there, he's a bit stifled.

When you see his Villa highlights and goals, a lot are in parts of the pitch he doesn't go for City, clearly under instructions. That's quite telling.

I really like Jack and I'm glad he's at City, and I'm sure he loves it and what he's won but from a pure footballing perspective, I think he probably would have excelled more in a club that let him just do what he did at Villa. In fact, he'd probably do very well in the current Villa side.

The trade off for Jack is that a club that would let him play more of a free role isn't a team that would get him those medals he has.

It's fair to say he's been disappointing, I can see that. But then I also question how a club can pay 100m for a player, only to not let him play the role that attracted you to him in the first place. I think his lack of impact isn't just down to him.

How much is he on a week? Like most big players that’s the stumbling block if you want to sell them, would we sell if we haven’t got a replacement, Christ the squad is small enough as it is.

The biggest stumbling block is his wages why would he leave on a pay cut. Villa aren't paying 300k a week

But he didn't have the freedom of the pitch in the treble season and yet he was a good performer, so why has his performances dropped off a cliff since then,
it's not all down to his position is it.

Well last season he had a bit of a stop-start season, this one hasn't been much better either.

Of course its not all down to position.

I think he's a big confidence player. Some players let it affect them more than others. Look at Erling, even when he's misfiring, he seems like he knows he will be scoring soon enough and he kicks back into gea.

Jack seems like he needs to know someome has full belief in him and he's getting a good run of games. Maybe that's why he looked good in the latter part of the treble season, because it was clear he was seen as an integral part of the team. It was the only time i ever got the impression he felt he's really at that level.
