10 | Jack Grealish - 2024/25

People are completely fixated on the £100m fee. I think (and evidence seems to support this) that the fee brings its own pressure. Jack is the only one of the top 10 most expensive signings of all time to win the CL at his new club

I'd argue that after Mbappe, Grealish has been the 2nd most successful of the top 10 most expensive signings of all time.

And clearly Jack has 3 more PL titles than Declan Rice, Fernandez and Caicedo.

1 Neymar Barcelona - PSG 2017 €222m
2 Kylian Mbappe Monaco - PSG 2017 €145m (+€35m)
3 Joao Felix Benfica - Atletico Madrid 2019 €126m
4 Enzo Fernandez Benfica - Chelsea 2023 €121m
=5 Philippe Coutinho Liverpool - Barcelona 2018 €120m (+€40m)
=5 Antoine Griezmann Atletico Madrid - Barcelona 2019 €120m
=7 Moises Caicedo Brighton - Chelsea 2023 €117m (+€17.5m)
=7 Declan Rice West Ham - Arsenal 2023 €117m (+€6m)
=7 Jack Grealish Aston Villa - Manchester City 2021 €117m
10 Romelu Lukaku Inter - Chelsea 2021 €115m
Still can’t believe the Lukaku Fee and how quick it went wrong. Barely gets mentioned

What or who is a £100m player given Jack is the only one of them to have won the CL at his new club?

Jack being an integral part of City winning 3 Premier Leagues, 1 Champions League, 1 FA Cup, 1 UEFA Super Cup and 1 FIFA Club World Cup in his 3 seasons here isn't Pep and Txiki being wrong.
If any of those players you mention had signed for City instead of who they did sign for I think it's fairly safe to say they would have won the champions league too.

In a team sport the only stat that ultimately matters is results.

I saw an article around a year or so ago that had Jack top of a players points per game chart, presumably because Rodri was involved in more drawn games. So you can be as sniffy as you like about Grealish winning free kicks but retaining possession high up the pitch helps City sustain attacks and thus helps the team's attacking and prevents counter attacks which helps the team's defending.

It's bizarre and absurd to claim Grealish "hasn't been a success" and has been a "massive disappointment" as when Grealish is in the team City tend to win more and when he's not in the team City tend to lose more.

Which is why Grealish:

  • played the majority of PL games in each of the 3 title winning seasons he's been here
  • started 12 of 13 games and came on as a sub in the other group game in City's CL winning campaign becoming the only £100 million pound player to win the CL for his new club
  • has appeared only as a sub for 20 minutes at 3-0 down in the 5 defeats this season
I stand by my statement that he has been a huge disappointment. You disagree and that's fine, at the end of the day it's all about opinions.

Can’t be any worse than what we already have, he doesn’t lose it often and could break the lines to get a through ball to Haaland, does fuck all on the left for me these days, ye he keeps the ball unfortunately he doesn’t release it to do any damage either.
Would his final ball or finishing be any better in the middle.

Because we lack incisive defence splitting passing and through balls as part of our tactical build up play he's not nearly as exciting for a fan as Doku despite it being debatable whether he's actually more effective. I'd play him in a 10 role, but they won't and never will.
