10 | Rayan Cherki - 2025/26

Would love to revisit the Pellegrini 4-2-2-2 with this lineup. Obviously we'd need to play Haaland and Marmoush literally every second of every game as we only have two forwards in the entire fucking squad, but other than that...

I've been posting this for the past 3 days. Brazil played this way for years. They had Cafu and Roberto Carlos and then Dani Alves and Marcello to provide the width from the back. We can also play Reijnders next to Phil and either Cherki or Marmoush in support of Haaland. Even Doku as an option. Or Cherki can play next Reijnders with Marmoush or Phil supporting Haaland. So many options...

Its only a matter of time that Cherki gets more game time in the league. Playing at Swansea is one thing can he create those chances and have the time when up against some of the defenders in this league. I think he has but we can't expect him to create chance after chance. You look at Doku he's standing up and starting to be more of a attacking problem for the defenders as his end product is getting better but it's taken him time to get this far. Same with Cherki. We just need all the midfielders and full backs chipping in with assists as well as goals. This next 2 home games are going to be vital as to where we are going this season win both were in a good place.

Great to watch last night, a real maverick of a player. Hopefully he can do it against better teams but swansea made it tough and Cherki always looked and was the most likely to unpick the lock. Not sure how it fits when him and Foden are fit but hopefully the bald fella's got something under his sleeve, but whatever happens it's definitely exciting seeing this lad get up to speed

More than anything it'd be nice to just see Pep try something different.

During his Bayern tenure and first season here he had a new formation every week, and it didn't always work, but our current system is looking dated and yet he seems completely married to it.

Foden has been playing deeper much more an 8 this season ,which is where I think he'll settle. He's also been playing it very well, it's just not as eyecatching a position.Ideally he'll play 8 ,Cherki 10 eventually. with combinations of Rodri/Gonzalez in the 6.
That's why I see a Foden, Rodri/Nick G/Cherki trio as our go to.

Reijnders is a better fill for Cherki than Foden, considering how poor defensively he is.

We literally played like this last season when Haaland was injured and went on a good run.

Even the bench players would prefer this, Reijnders at LAM with less defensive work.

Bobby and Savinho on the right.

Doku would also thrive in the spot Marmoush is in.

Kova, Bernie can fill in DM spots.

We even bought RAN.

I think the reason we haven't seen it is because of our 3 DMs, only 1 has been fit at a time.

When all 3 of Rodri, Nico G, and Kova are fit, I suspect we see it brought back.

Remember when Tevez was in our side? Remember the tidy one-two touches he had with David Silva to break a low block and get a great shot on goal sometimes leading to a score?

We've lacked that sort of offense for a long, long while.

Might it - however, resurface with Cherki and Foden and Reijinders? I think and hope so. We're capable of a quick one-two past a low block, but so far this hasn't been exploited. Hopefully Pep will employ this into our attack

If cherki can hit the intensity/effort/dedication levels of either Silva or Tevez then he will be a true great..

It remains to be seen and its just the start. Comparing him to those two is getting ahead of ourselves. He has the ability, technical skill and audacity as well......but he will need the drive, intensity and willingness to the do the dirty work on the pitch and dedication, willingness to learn and humbleness off the pitch....that will be the bit that singles him out....

Is he going t be a Tevez/Silva or is he going to be a Ballotelli (who, dont get me wrong, I loved BUT he never hit the level he had the ability to)

I would like to see something like:

WITHOUT BALL 4-2-3-1
Donnarumma
Matheus N., Khusanov, Rúben, Gvardiol
Reijnders, Nico
Cherki, Foden, Doku
Haaland

WITH BALL 3-2-4-1
Donnarumma
Khusanov, Rúben, Gvardiol
Reijnders, Nico
Matheus N., Cherki, Foden, Doku
Haaland

That way with Matheus acting like the RW in attack, Cherki could defend in the side and attack in the middle along Foden. Also we gain solidity with defensive midfielder duo (even Nico + Rodri when fit).

Also, too many are trying to get Foden into the team when in reality, bar United at home, he has been as poor as the likes of Savinho and Bobb this season.

A flicks and tricks moments footballer.
He really hasn’t. He’s played his best football in a deeper role but to accommodate reijnders and Silva he’s been pushed towards that ten position. He doesn’t get the GA but he has been good.

Cherki will never be a workhorse like Tevez was. He's lazy on defense - and that will probably always be the case.

Given that he's fantastically gifted on the ball - and lazy - how do we best make use of him? I'd love to see a Foden-Cherki one-two combination through the middle - because that's going to unlock virtually every low block.

At the same time... the more defensive responsibility Cherki assumes - the worse out defense is probably going to get.

For me - start Cherki as RW and allow him to drift inwards to express himself. To cover for this, start one of our best defensive RBs - Nunes or Khusanov.

I can’t work out if Cherki is going to be a success at city or not. Too early to tell. The fact he was relatively cheap and no one else came in for him does cause concern but he’s shown glimpses of class in limited game time.

Nobody came in for that chap Silva and he proved successful at around £24m; Lyon’s pecuniary plight and his contract also affected his sale price.

Players who are genuinely class don’t show it in glimpses because it is a permanent state, and anyone who has watched Cherki for Lyon, France U21, and France knows that he is ridiculously talented. I wouldn’t start him today, as, for me, he isn’t yet fit enough for a robust Bournemouth side that is flying high; Swansea were spent after 35 minutes. However, once he and others are fully fit, we’ll see and appreciate his gifts more fully.

Ooo somebody doesn’t understand football clearly

What's he offering?

I don't see him controlling games, offering assists or goals.

Too many have blue tinted glasses on with Foden because he is one of our own.

If this was Saka at Arsenal or Mainoo at United, we would be calling it out on a dedicated thread on this forum.

If he is lazy off the ball then he wont ever be any use to us.

You cant afford that type of player in the premiership....

Thsi will define him and which way his career at city goes.

If he doesnt put the running in Im not sure Pep will play him once he sees evidence of that (if that is the case)

Would love him to be ready to start today but realistically the best I can hope for is 20 mins of the second half
