10 | Rayan Cherki - 2025/26

Wait and see.....he will be absolute quality!
I’m not saying he isn’t absolute quality now, technically he’s right up there and great to watch. Just don’t think he’ll be able to dictate a game like David could and won’t ever have the physical attributes of a prime KDB to be everywhere on the pitch and burst away from most central midfielders. Wasn’t slagging him off and if the team is correct around him he could be equally creative.

Don't get the criticism of him, Foden, and Bernardo create absolutely nothing. He is the one who tries to play creative passes . Once he and Doku were subbed, we lost all the spark.
I don’t think it’s people really being critical of him. It was just we were too open against an athletic Newcastle side. He doesn’t have the physicality to get up and down the pitch. We had 2 wide players playing narrow, so leaving space for their 2 very good fullbacks to attack us. It’s a system that had been working very well for us but last night by h/t it was pretty clear to see they were getting in against us too much. Doku was by far are most effective player up to that point so to change it and leave us less open Cherki for some more legs or balance was the obvious change.

However, it’s all fine margins as if Foden had finished such a simple chance before h/t we’re 2-1 up and Cherki has an assist.

1 assist today, should have had 2. Did his job today. Still growing into his role. Output is good. He has a future here. Very confident he will grow into his role very nicely.
Not sure he’ll be accredited with the assist. It was a partially cleared cross that fell to Dias.

I think what you are currently seeing with Cherki, and actually Reijnders as well, is the huge difference between the standard of the Premier League and the leagues in France and Italy respectively. You just don’t come up against a midfield three as good and as physical as Newcastle’s in France, and Cherki is struggling a bit with the pace of it presently. One thing about the elevated view at SJP looking down the pitch, is that you can see perfectly the tactics being applied, and Newcastle jumped all over Cherki the moment he got the ball. He needs to get used to it, and I think he will, the quality is certainly there, but it is a big step up.

Would’ve walked away with 2 assists if team forgot how it finish yesterday. I love him but he really needs to cool it with the sloppy misplaced passes. Especially in high intensity games. Against lower teams and cup game yea but not against teams like Newcastle and Pool.

he’ll be just fine, way better than Reinjders. Who’s shown little to no signs he can replicate his debut performance.

Two of those Newcastle three were signed from the teams Cherki and Reijnders played for, so it can't have been that much of a shock

Watched him closely for his 25 minutes tonight and was a little bit shocked at how unfit he looked and the lacknof energy he put in considering we were 2 down and he was brought on to try and get us back in it. At one point when we played Haaland in he jogged forward about 10 yards and stopped, no trying to get up behind him in and back him up in case the ball came back out. Even his jogging was laboured and looking like he was attempting a run around the estate for the first time. Maybe it was the cold weather but he looked fucked from the moment he came on.

I swear he will break out from a trot into a full blown jog one day soon. Complete lack of any urgency or intensity in his game right now.

so far, when we are coasting, it's all fine and he can bring out the party pieces and add a cherry on top but when we need an impact, he's been found wanting and largely a passenger.

Remember when Kalvin Phillips was dropped from the squad for being overweight and unfit, how is Cherki not failing those same tests? Shouldn't be in the squad until he proves he can at the very least run.
