10 | Rayan Cherki - 2025/26

The boy will come good again.
He’s young.
Thrown into the melting pot that is the Premier League and helped us to be in the position we are in with some outstanding performances.
A few games on the bench might do him the world of good to recharge his batteries.
Class is permanent, form is temporary.

For me Cherki is technically more gifted than David, but at times he is more focused on himself, how to do something impressive rather than help the team.

That's the main thing that has bothered Pep and it has been visible since that goal vs Arsenal. David and KdB and Bernardo and Gundo, etc., were team first players (i.e. putting the team first). Cherki was good vs Burnley but tried to walk with the ball in the net and has lost (the right kind of) focus since then.

I think Cherki is close to where KdB or David were at 23 (maybe even better in *some* respects) . The main challenge is a mental one: to avoid being a me first player and put a proper shift for the team.
I don’t think a propensity to do tricks makes him more technical gifted than David. He’s a top talent and supremely gifted but David had the ball at the end of a string and never would lose it. They were similarly paced but David never lost the ball, Cherki does and I don’t think it’s all to do with him being more of a risk taker.

Though Cherki has two footedness over him tbf.

Is it Cherki's fault he's playing with players that are not on the same technical wavelength as him?
That isn’t it, don’t make excuses for him. He has moments of brilliance but doesn’t do a lot of the simple stuff right. If you want him to improve you can’t brush over his weaknesses. Going to be top but has many areas to improve to get to Silva and KDB levels.

For sure, but we have to admit that KDB and Silva were surrounded by better talent than this year's squad with the likes of Gundo, Aguero, Mahrez, Yaya, Cancelo, Sane, Sterling, Prime Rodri, Fernandinho

I think Cherki is a better dribbler. Currently he is more focused on doing something brilliant than keeping the ball rolling. In that he's more KdB than David. Unlike David, KdB was guilty of losing the ball cheaply on bad days.

Nothing beats David's drop of the shoulder I am going left, fooled you I went right, turn in midfield and he did it time and time again no opposition player ever read it .

The main problem is his positioning. He keeps dropping too deep and moving too close to the teammate with the ball, which only brings more defenders in and blocks the passing lanes. So all he can do is just play simple passes backwards.

He should stay higher up near the box and look for spaces to receive the ball instead of coming short and closing the space himself. That only makes it easier for defenders to stay tight behind him and stop him every time.

That’s a given but we can’t pretend Cherki is struggling now because of the technical ability of the rest of the team. Isn’t stopping Doku is it.

You can’t blame the other players for his own poor performances and decision making.

What the hell are you on about. Cherki has for the most part been playing great. He has made the difference in games with crucial assists and goals. He is a young lad in his first season. Players like Rodri and Bernardo struggled badly in their first season with these brain dead so called City fans calling them a waste of money. Cherki is a young lad finding his feet in the PL and also happens to be one of the most talented and gifted players in the world. I hope all true City fans get right behind this young man instead of criticising him so much at the start of his City career. He has the potential to be an absolute star for us in the coming years and I just love watching him play.

Literally just talking about his last 2-3 performances in a crucial season end run-in, saying to the other poster that you cannot blame the other players skill level for his downturn in performance, which is what he was doing.

When did I say he was completely shit lmao.

I know you have his poster on your wall but come on mate, grow up.

You did not say that he was completely shit...don't be so sensitive.

I had to laugh at your last sentence. You have the cheek to talk about growing up and then come out with an infantile comment about having a poster on a wall...good one pal.

You’re the one sending me paragraphs getting upset about things I haven’t even said lol

You’re taking your frustrations around an entire fanbase out on me. I like Cherki, he has his faults though and they aren’t due to the rest of the squad, which is what you replied to.

Unless you agree with the other poster believing that it’s the squads technical level that is Cherki’s problem recently, then I’m not sure what you’re arguing with me for mate. Well within my right to snap back when you’re lumping me in with a group you call ‘brain dead’.

I absolutely agree with your point about the relevance of the squads technical level around him.

Looks to have run out of steam a little along with Semenyo. Not worried at all.
Doku's aura is crippling everyone else. He is si dominant at present, that everything naturally gravitates to his side. The rate of positive outcomes demands it.

Especially with Semenyo, we play so much on the left that its hard to see how he could be great when everything ( rightly so) gets funnelled to the left. Semenyo is feeding on scraps. And you can see it sometimes.

Even Cherki has to migrate left to get involved a lot lately. Semenyo unfortunately doesn't have that positional luxury. So he us stuck with scraps

I'm not complaining by the way, Kvara and Doku are the 2 most dominant left wingers in World Football right now, so its not surprising that we are a bit lopsided. We'd need someone close to the individual talents of Yamal/Olise on the left to be worth giving both sides equal play. Or perhaps Doku having a bad day.

Doku's rate of success at creating is just too high at the moment to ignore. So Antoine or whoever plays right at the moment simply aren't gonna get an even shot

No hard feelings fella. I think he’s ace like, and will be the best in his position in years to come, but has flaws to iron out like any player his age.

He's nowhere near the level Dave was, I'm surprised anyone even thinks that to be honest
