10 | Rayan Cherki - 2025/26

He's nowhere near the level Dave was, I'm surprised anyone even thinks that to be honest

You don't compare Silva at 22 with Cherki but prime Silva with Cherki at 22.

If you compare the top 5 technically brilliant David moments in his first season, when he was 24 btw, with the top 5 Cherki moments this season, you might see the point. For starters, IIRC, David never scored a goal as brilliant as Cherki's in a game as big as Arsenal.

No hard feelings fella. I think he’s ace like, and will be the best in his position in years to come, but has flaws to iron out like any player his age.
No problem at all mate. Fair comment both on Cherki's present situation and his future in the team. I think maybe the young lad suffers a bit from the weight of expectation on him which has obviously been created by some of the incredible football he has produced so far.

What's gonna be so interesting is watching how he develops in the years to come.

Silva arrived when he was 24, Cherki when he was 21; time is yet on his side.
Completely different players. Technically he’s better than David but David was consistently brilliant. Cheri is 22 though and more of a risk taker. He might never be able to dictate a game like Silva could but few could and time is in his side.

Reading this thread Doku better be init tonight or people will be on here tomorrow saying he can never reach the level we need!

Different players, true, but also different times. Silva also played with midfielders such as Toure and Nasri, arguably the finest three I’ve seen. It’s one of the reasons I’d rather see us sign technically better players in midfield to complement Cherki, rather than surround him with ‘physicality’ and have him become the sole risk taker in midfield. Too easy to nullify then.

As long as Doku is on the pitch and on form, there's little risk of the opposition concentrating mostly on Cherki.

Of course, there's no harm in having technically gifted players. But in Doku and Cherki we have the best creators from open play in the league. It's natural to want to complement them with players who make us robust in duels and add physicality

They cannot play in every game, though, and I just fear that the balance sometimes is tipping too far toward physicality over technique, but I guess that is a result of the domestic game being encouraged to head in that direction.

That may be a problem indeed. I was a bit critical of Pep that he went with Semenyo at the Bernabeu rather than Cherki.

What we need in midfield are players who are both very good in duels and excellent passers of the ball. Anderson might be that. Haven't watched him enough to be sure.

Not have I, admittedly.

If all three English sides win in Europe, some may see it as vindication and view the game in rude health, particularly with Chelsea winning last summer as well. I’m less certain. Yeomen may be enough to get us through the hard winter months, but come the spring you still need artistes, plural, to win in Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, and Munich. Striking that balance is not easy.

Got his mojo back which is excellent news for Saturday. Thought he looked off it form wise in the last two games.

Needs that movement ahead of him, Haaland has to get on his bike when Cherki gets the ball and trust him to find him the way De Bruyne used to.

No, he just performed an 8 or 9 out of 10 every week.
Cherki scored against Arsenal yes, but he didn’t do much against Burnley or Everton in the following games

Time may be on his side but Dave performed at the highest level, winning world cups and Euros. I sincerely hope Cherki reaches that level but the comparison is futile at this present time

He’s one of them players that looks quicker when he has the ball at feet and running with it
What a pass last night as well running at speed

David had unimpressive games too, even when he was in his prime. For example, he wasn't really great in the CL. I remember expecting much more from him in both legs vs Liverpool in the CL. He put in two 6/7 performances at best.

Also, Cherki might be more like KdB in that he is more of a risk taker. KdB had some really poor games where he was losing the ball and contributing little. But many more top, top performances than David, especially in the biggest games.

I remember David had 16 assists in one season, but I'm not sure whether he had more than Cherki from open play, despite playing more games/minutes. And that's Cherki several years younger than David was at the time.

Love the guy. It was like men against boys when he came on last night, must be a proper pain in the arse to get near - especially when he’s fresh and you’re knackered.
