Sloppy moments from him just like the rest of the side, both of the centre backs struggled more than usual today because Southampton put on a very accomplished press and the options infront of them were very very limited, they can't play a pass if it's not on and it's ingrained in them not to panic and launch it so it ends up with us giving it away. It's too simple to blame the two centre backs for that when the main reason is the lack of options infront.

This applies to the entire defence but especially laporte, he needs to be moving the ball more quickly, they invite the press too much at times, I understand they're doing it to open spaces but when the press is catching you out they have to move the ball side to side quicker, shift the opposition and wait for the gaps to come instead of pausing on the ball, trying to force them and losing it.

Defensively they were fine, the problems at the back were largely from a complete lack of cover infront of them from Rodri and the lack of tracking from sterling of livramento.

Seems to be a weird building swarm wanting to make laporte the latest scapegoat. He's been off last few games, so have the entire team back to front, he's still been our best defender all season.

I don't get why people continue to suggest he's slow either, he might have a languid body movement at times but he's the quickest centre back we've got.
I agree with you and to add to the highlighted piece, we also have an issue at left back, which is affecting Laporte.

I like Cancelo as an attacking player, some of his runs and passing is top drawer however he's not a defender and Laporte basically is asked to cover his position too.

This is why we look stretched and open because once a team presses and breaks through our midfield they have numbers that cause a problems because players are out of position and some are not tracking back.

With some crucial, big games coming up, either Cancelo reigns in his attacking instincts or we need to play Zinchenko to give us a more solid back 4.

Ake's improved a lot this season now he's got used to City. I trust him now in a way I wouldn't at the start of the season
He has indeed but definitely still below Laporte in the scheme of things. As for Laporte it seems the partnership that arose with Dias and Stones has somehow messed with his head and he isn’t the same solid player we had before then anymore.

How is this thread not buzzing about Eric's takedown of United in the press today?
“Maybe it’s not that they’re tired of us but they don’t think it’s normal we always win. If I’m not mistaken, we’ve won 11 trophies in four years that can annoy people, like our neighbours who haven’t won anything. They have a lot of supporters, we’re in the same city. It’s hard to understand. But there’s only one winner. They’ve spent a lot of money too."

When he’s asked whether there’s anything City could take from Liverpool for his team, the short answer is no. The long one is this: “The football we play, no one else plays in the world. We’re an example of how to play nice football, to be superior in all areas. I think they’d like even part of our game. As for us having something of them: taking chances and benefiting from opponents’ errors a little more, because often we have the opportunity and don’t take it. We let the other team off. But there’s nothing to be envious about.”
“We’re humans, people have to understand that: just as we beat United, we lost to Palace. You can’t explain that with money. However much a player costs, that doesn’t mean he’s going to be the best. It’s not an exact science. We’re leaders, a point ahead of Liverpool. We have the best defence – and [yet] people throw defensive issues at us. I don’t want to imagine what our neighbours …”

Absolutely brilliant interview with Sid Lowe all the way through by the way, about how people don't appreciate football and footballers enough and want to revel in the negatives all the time.

Think he's earned an extension

Love it when players come back fighting against nonsensical arguments that are common-place in the media. The bite back about our defence is brilliant.

Excellent read that interview with Laporte, comes across very well and sounds like he is enjoying himself at the moment.
