Our build-up play always suffers if we don't have at least one of Laporte and Stones on the pitch.
Stones being injured, Laporte should be starting every game he's fit. None of our other centre-backs, despite their other qualities, are anywhere near the quality of those two in moving the ball forward from defence.
Laporte is a player who always wants to leave if he isn't playing, and I get that can be frustrating, but still - he needs to be playing. It affects our whole game for the worse if the defence has no passing vision.
The problem we've got playing an effective 3 at the back is that it doesn't leave much room for him. He can't play on the right (that's got to be Walker, Stones or Akanji (when we play Lewis he inverts and leaves the other 3 as effectively the full defence)) and we need the strength and leadership of Ruben, who's best in the middle. That leaves Laporte fighting for the left-hand spot of the 3 (with Bernardo or whoever as the inverted left back) with Ake whose defensive solidity has been vital for us in this formation, and who you could definitely argue deserves to start.
Play 4 at the back and Laporte's surely playing regularly as the LCB and we all benefit from it.
