14 | Nico Gonzalez - 2025/26

Positioning could be better and it seems like he refuses long and high passes. Nonetheless good game

Yep, that's what I noticed back in February and that thing is still going on...

What's funny, today every our player tried that. Even Rico, even Bobb, literally everyone and only he didn't even try.

It's a big issue because what's a DM without those quarterback passes...

But I don't think it's that big issue, because Ruben Dias for example during these years has improved that skill so much, that his long pass delivery is really good, so it means that Nico can also improve.

I have a feeling that for him pass accuracy is more important and not to worsen the statistics, he chooses to play simpler passes.

I wouldn't say that his passes are always backwards or useless, because he has good talent delivering ball between the zones and cutting those zones, but if he adds long passes to that, it will be better.

Not the fastest, so at times he’s going to need cover behind him, but he’s clever with the ball and moved into space. Still work to do on building upper-body strength and generally toughening up, but the latter will come with more league games,

When he is filling in for Rodri I would rather he played it safe instead of ‘ quarterback ‘ passes that lead to teams breaking on us

Can’t think any of Peps DMs have been known for ‘quaterback passes’. It isn’t what Pep,wants from his 6s.

Very very good.

Feel so sorry for him that Rodri’s at our club. Anywhere else in the world, he’s undoubtedly first choice. He’s special.

Rodri plays long passes a lot.

Fernandinho played a lot

Gundogan played a lot

Literally every our player has that skill, even Rico tried today long pass to Doku.

I am not talking about quarterback pass that cuts whole defence and leaves player in 1vs1 situation, I am talking about routine long ball pass when you receive ball in the centre and find Doku or Bob and deliver that pass on that wing.

Short passes I understand but you also need quicker transitions, so that you could find gaps in defences.

Imagine Ederson without that ability and how difficult it would be for us, if he always played short passes and now imagine DM who always plays short passes.

I am 1000% sure Pep wants him to improve that.

He’s probably best as a 6/8 hybrid. He’ll cover both Rodri and Reijnders well when they need a rest and learn what he needs to learn in the process.

I rate him. Good cover for Rodri (something we've always struggled with) but I think they'd play well together as well. Lots of versatility in the midfield once everyone is fit.
