14 | Nico Gonzalez - 2025/26

Pep's biggest mistake in the CWC was not starting Nico vs Al Hilal. Nico wasn't that good back then, but arguably still better at DM than Reijnders.

It's safe to say Pep was hugely impressed with Reijnders and preferred him at 6 over Nico, but Reijnders didn't deliver in that role. Pep tried Tijjani at 6 vs Villa as well (this time due to injuries), but the experiment failed again. Reijnders isn't a DM. He's more of an 8 than a 6, and more of a 10 than an 8.

I would say he's more of a substitute than a 6 8 or10 at the moment .raindear not nico

Possibly mate, it may also be from the clubs end as well though if his fitness keeps breaking down?
We need them both. So best can be rested but I am also convinced they can play together as both can play as an 8. Gives Pep great options.

We still need to add another DM who is a beast with serious pace to give Pep even more options.

Still amuses me how many people reckoned Pep didn’t rate Nico.

I think he’s flying under the radar in terms of praise from anyone but City fans. He’s a very classy footballer his choice and weight of pass are excellent and he doesn’t panic. I really enjoy watching him he still reminds me of Gaz Baz

Great to see him starting to show his ability now with a run of games, and very encouraging to see Pep publicly praising him. A reminder that patience is required with young players in a new league. Think there’s a place for him in the team even when Rodri is back - he’s more than just an understudy now.
Nico was good straight from the off on his debut against Newcastle. Lots of positive comments on the MOTM thread (including a MOTM vote from me):

Struggled away a bit at Madrid and at home to Liverpool but they were much better than us all over the pitch in both of those games not just midfield.

Other than that, when he played he usually played well, and when he played well we played well as a team. I thought he was one of the main differences in us going from being utterly shit from October to New Year, to adding some stability to the team when he played and being part of us going on that good run to the end of the season (as well as Gündoğan, Nunes and Gvardiol).

Was one of our better players at Forest and we crumbled when he went off. Very good in our 5-2 win against Palace. Top class at Fulham on the final day.

It took the wider football world years to finally understand how good Rodri is, so that's not a great surprise

Agree with all that.
