#16 | Rodri - 2020/21 Performances

I remember Gerard Houllier talking about players and how he looked at their strengths and what they could give the team, rather than focus on what they were not good at.
In my opinion, Rodri is very skilled at breaking opponent attacks with interceptions. He is strong on the ball, retains possession well and is an accurate passer, short and long, often making key passes through the lines. Against that he has slow recovery pace.

Some on here focus on players weaknesses and ignore everything they bring. It only happens with certain players and becomes folklore but anyone watching the Arsenal game and calling Rodri's performance poor, or even less than good, watches a different game to me.
Imo you are correct. Some are like DM writers, blinkered with their negative narrative prepared pre-match ready to be spat out regardless of what happens in a game. As a coach I always found that using what strengths a player had to the benefit of the squad while quietly trying to improve on the weakness of the individual always proved best.

Imo, he also failed to read a number of situations which should be food & drink to a top quality def mid. And lost the ball in danger area.

He had 3 cbs behind him, Cancelo dropping in plus Bernardo often even turning up in his own box.

Even Pogba could have played there.

I have to say I'm really getting tired of you and @PannickAtTheDisco just saying the same recycled shit in this thread every 3 days, and I can't believe I'm the only one.

Yes, we get it, he's not Fernandinho and you don't like him.

He played perfectly well yesterday. Was it a 10/10? No, but that's not worth the constant negativity. He was very effective at beating Arsenal's press, he bailed out a lot of teammates when they came under pressure by being always available for an easy pass and always able to take the ball and move it on quickly no matter how many Arsenal players surrounded him.

Then, without the ball, he won back possession more than anyone else on the pitch - more than anyone has in 1 game across the entire league season.

That's a solid game, and it was at the heart of a solid 1-0 win. It was not a game where a normal person would think "I need to run to my computer and complain about how he did something wrong in the 31st minute that Fernandinho would never".

If you're going to spam this thread with negative comments at least try and come up with something new, instead of the same shite over and over.

Pep loves him, he's not going anywhere so I'd suggest just getting this attempt to make him the new whipping boy.

I'm sure you'll all ignore this and continue to post the same comments before and after every game we play but I felt it was worth a try.

Wouldn’t say he had a bad game but it wasn’t any better than mediocre. At least 3 occasions I remember somebody almost walking past him embarrassingly easily. Not only does he not have the pace necessary for his role, he doesn’t make it difficult to get around him either and he’s too willing to throw his freebie foul away early and get booked when it’s not worth it. Fernandinho knows when it’s worth taking a booking and when he needs to keep it in his back pocket as an option later.

His passing was more progressive than usual today to his credit but that was mainly down to him often dropping into centre back to receive the ball with cancelo moving forward so he didn’t have the backwards pass unless he went back to Ederson. Still sooner have Gundogan in there if it’s not Fernandinho as he isn’t any worse defensively than Rodri but at least his first thought is a forward pass.
I love Fernandinho as a player but there is not a player in the squad who has been needlessly booked more often than he has, and he was a lot more experienced than Rodri when he joined us.

Yeah you accused me of saying hewas shit, in the past & I asked you to prove it, but you didn't, because I didn't, because I think he's a top player.

I don't thik he's the right man for us & we could be miles better with the right man.

And just who the fuck do you think you are, censoring opinons, apart from yours ?

You need to look up what censoring means, because telling someone you're tired of seeing them just repetitively say the same thing is not censoring.

Secondly, read again (for the first time maybe?) because I didn't say you said he was shit, I said you were repeating the same old shit.

Every comment you ever make around Rodri is either "Fernadinho is better" or "He's slow".

Sorry @ NK but the last bit really isn't true.

You accused me of looking to belittle Rodri on every occasion, previously & I asked you to give examples. You couldn't, because it wasn't true.

After watching our midfield constantly outpaced & him failling to pick up dangerous moments which the 'right' player would do, I have decided I think he's the wrong man. If we play a game, I am entitled to comment on the fucking player performance thread, what I think about it.

I would be delighted to be wrong. And I believe we can win the title etc, with him.

But we can do, much much better.
