#16 | Rodri - 2020/21 Performances

I don’t want to write Rodri off yet, as he’s still a young player and it’s only his second season. But I think there are too many missing sides to his game that are really difficult to learn. Lots of us have pointed out the issues with mobility and general positional play. I think the other key point is not having the mental attributes (tenacity, work rate, awareness) and not linking up between out defence and attacks. These are all skills that our best DMs had - early Yaya, De Jong, Fernandinho. On reflection, in the past when Fern was missing through injury it definitely affected our results, but Gundo deputised well enough that our system still functioned in the same way

We’ve had a few DMs who never quite fit in, and who affected the balance of our team so much that the entire system of play looked different, and the attack and defence became disjointed and error prone. Javi Garcia and Fernando being two of them. Based on current performances, I’m afraid Rodri sits in this camp for me. I hope we find a different role for him or he somehow adapts to what we need, but £60 million is frankly ridiculous for what we’ve seen so far
Great post mate and hope Rodri finds his feet soon, he looks like he should have all the attributes; if not, let's see him as a CB. He's a turnstyle in midfield but maybe a straight defence role will suit him and add to our thin stocks in central defence.

I'm watching todays game mainly focused on Rodri and his performance - because I need to clear all the doubts I have..

Later I will write report / review..

He’s fucking rubbish. That ‘effort’ to win the ball at the edge of West Ham’s box was disgraceful and almost resulted in Gundogen getting booked. He’s a shit house, and(it’s not said often enough) was responsible for Laporte’s injury last year

Him and Cancelo cost 120mil. Easy money if you can get it

Plodri.

Can see the difference from first half last season when he first joined to now.

This season, 75 touches, 47 passes, 1.59 touches per pass.
Last season 50 touches, 41 passes, 1.22 touches per pass.
In comparison Dinho 18/19 same game 55 touches, 47 passes, 1.17 touches per pass.

Taking more touches before moving the ball on, which shows how we've slowed down and we've lost tempo and forward impetus in our attacking play.

Was around the 75 min mark and Gundogan was on the ball, he was just stood there with his hands on his hips, look fucked.

I thought he had a good game today. Some important defensive challenges. Shielded the ball well in midfield. Nothing spectacular, but that’s not his job.

In a team were Front Three is doing literally nothing to help the team..

Bernardo and Gundogan look lazy and etc.

People want Rodri to win the games and do something.. He had no mistakes today, covered team number of times, won number of key battles, was delivering good long balls but our front three isn't playing at top10 level right now and that's the problem. What can Rodri do - become a superman ?

I can count 6-7 players that were worse than him today.

Since Wolves game - team can't score more than 1 goal in a PL match.

Arsenal -> 1
Leeds -> 1
West Ham -> 1
Leicester -> 2

And you say Rodri is the problem ?
