16 | Rodri 2025/26

I don’t think a team has ever missed a player more than we miss Rodri
It was same situation with Yaya Toure.

When Yaya started to loose his form and regress due to age, we became very soft and fragile team.

This and last year's City reminds me of 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 seasons.

Main problem was Yaya was carrying the team like Rodri was carrying, which means that other players weren't up to the level and therefore when someone stopped carrying them, they were exposed.

That wasn't the case when KDB was injured because all the other positions did their job well and therefore KDB wasn't carrying the team, he was making us stronger. That's why when Bernardo played instead of KDB, we were strong team anyway.

This team doesn't miss Rodri, we miss good LB and RB, good LW and RW, good N10.
Last season we also missed good CM, this year hopefully Reijnders will step up.

So we have 4-5-6 positions that aren't up to City's standards.

------------------------XXX-------------------------------------
------XXX------------Ruben-----------Guardiol--------------
------------Stones?------------Rodri?--------------------------
XXX--------Foden?-----------Reijnders------------------XXX
----------------------Haaland-----------------------------------

We have 4 top class players in Ruben, Guardiol, Reijnders and Haaland.

Stones, Rodri and Foden are also top class but we don't know how injury situation will continue with Rodri and Stones and how fast Phil regain his form.

And Without even question, GK, RB and LW/RW positions need to be strengthened.
Right now we play Rico, Trafford, Doku and Bobb, none of the are world class and all of them are unstable.

We need stable, elite level players.

That's why we are struggling. 4 players out of 11 at this stage.
We need at least 7-8 players so that we had luxury to play likes of Rico, Nico and other young ones.

I stopped reading when you said that Dias was 'top class'.

He's not.

He's not.

Right now maybe not, but over the years he has been one of the most important players and I think he will come back.

Foden isn't also top class right now and many our players, but that doesn't mean we should loose faith, especially when all of them are U30 and age isn't an issue here.

Therefore Dias will come back.

I have issue about players, who have never showed that level when at City and therefore we can never be sure if they ever reach that level, like: Doku, Rico, Nico, Savio, etc.

Dias has enough background to be respected at least.

That's the difference.

In terms of current form I agree 100%.

Dias has never improved since his first season. He's not good enough to be a starter.

In treble season he was the best, he returned from injury and was cornerstone of our defence.

Two moments: that tackle against Xhaka and that block on Musiala.

Against Madrid and Benzema he was good.
Against Inter

Dias is a player, without him you can't even imagine where City would have been...

So let's first concentrate on players like Rico, so that such players never played in Starting11 and then start thinking about elite level players like Ruben..

It's same situation as Ederson.
People complaining, complaining and now we have Trafford :)))

I have a feeling that defensively Rodri needs some assistance till he finds his best form..

It's not same Rodri physically who we remember from 2023/2024 season, when we played Doku-Alvarez-Foden-Haaland-Bernardo upfront and it was Rodri plus Akanji or Stones playing in the middle, he was literally doing the job of 3 midfielders alone

So considering what we saw against Tottenham, he will do great orchestrating how we play or controlling the tempo, etc. but when it comes to defence I think he needs player like Nico or Kovacic or Bernardo.

in 4-3-3 as usual you have one holding midfielder and two attacking midfielders aka 8s

But I think 4-2-1-3 system suits Rodri the best at this stage.

And Nico Gonzalez I think will do that job, like Gareth Barry was doing for Yaya...
Cover, sweep, help, stay back, etc.

Him and Foden looked quite sharp when they came on. If those two can stay fit it will make a huge difference. Rodri, Tijani and Phil has to be our first choice midfield.
The only problem would be in transition when you would expect at least two of those to be high up the pitch. It is a conundrum for us to solve. Opposition teams are playing a far simpler game, but one that is effective for the moment. It won't bring the success we had, but it is hard for us to play against while we develop a new team.

For me Ruben was man of the match against Inter in the final...

When Rodri first came in, I though he was slow. It took me a while to realise how good he was. Now when he comes on I am looking for physical signs that he is still the same player. I am worried that he might not be the same player. Rodri seems critical to me because the new signings are themselves bedding in.

I think Pep is doing the right thing in giving him 15-20 mins and slowly building it up.
