I don't judge Kev for ball retention

I'm sorry but it's not as if we're talking about him skipping between three players on the halfway line or him giving the ball away trying to play one of those Kev passes. The guy had all the time in the world to play simple passes and take simple touches all first half and completely fucked it up under no pressure. Then he's got the audacity to fling his arms about and act like everyone was holding him back and not the other way around.

Talking about the differing strengths and weaknesses of different players is simply muddying the waters. He was crap and that's the bottom line. Not a single player on either team had any business getting the basics wrong as much as he did yesterday.

We don't judge Lewandowski for having a 62% pass accuracy in the CL final against PSG

Because it's a results driven business. If Lewandowski spent ninety minutes twatting the ball into row Z from three yards in front of an open goal and Bayern went on to lose then you better believe that would be a mark against his name for the rest of his career.

If Kev pulled off two or three of his classic assists yesterday then he'd be still heralded as a genius who had a poor game. That's happened pretty often this season and, unfortunately, he didn't produce any of those moments to paper over the cracks.

I know why he's in this team and I know that he's a risk taker. Rightfully so because he's the best at it. Unfortunately, when you get the simple stuff so blatantly fucking wrong all game and spend half your time whinging at your teammates, then you simply have to produce those moments. And he didn't.

There's a tendency to think that good performances over a 6 game stretch can be extrapolated to a 38 game season or 60 plus including cups with the exact same tactics and players, but sometimes it's necessary to change so that the team can evolve.

How about two thirds of a treble winning season?

Kevin made 8 key passes yesterday. The next highest was Gundo with 3. That's his job in the team - chance creation. He did it. Could he have done better? Sure, but we're arguing whether a 7/10 performance is better than 10/10. Of course it is. The idea that somehow he was the worst performer on the pitch is quite something. I would imagine that a bloody striker conceding a penalty in the 2nd minute, a RB running around like a headless chicken for 90 min and a winger missing multiple tap ins from 4 yards out would be in contention for the worst performance, but what do I know. Replace Kev with Bernardo and Gundo and Stones each bag a hattrick. Football is simple.

We're talking about a guy who has has missed more than month worth of games through injury and is still somehow sitting with the 3rd highest assists in the top leagues this season, but apparently he is a shadow of his former self. Some of you lot would have sold Aguero in 16/17 because Gabby worked harder.
Argue the toss all you like mate. If you think he was 7/10 yesterday I cant help you. Others were bad as well.

Lets see what Pep does. If he decides to continue to play him back to form I hope he reaches it quickly.

How about two thirds of a treble winning season?
Is the implication that we won the domestic treble without Kevin therefore we don't need him to succeed? Fine, I'll bite.

In 18/19 season, we had Aguero, Jesus, Sterling, Sane, Silva, Bernardo, Gundogan and Mahrez as the attacking threats with Kevin mostly in the physio room. Now we can write essays on total football, Juego de Posicion, pausa and other fancy things, but at the end of the day to win a football match, someone has to put the ball in the back of the net.

Now there are instances where a player is so out of this world, like Messi, where an "assist" is not even needed. He can take the ball from 40 yards out and just dribble his way into the goal. But in most other cases, a chance needs to be created for a goal to be scored. Like a proper chance - a low cross from open play, a through ball, a cross from corner - but some kind of an assist is needed. So we need both - goalscorers and playmakers.

Okay now let's look at the goalscorers and playmakers in 18/19 season (league only) -

1. Aguero - 21
2. Sterling - 17
3. Sane - 10
4. Bernardo - 7
5. Mahrez - 7

Total goals by top 5 contributors - 62
Total goals by the team - 95

Now assists -
1. Sterling - 12
2. Sane - 11
3. Bernardo - 8
4. David - 8
5. Aguero - 7

Total assists by top 5 contributors - 45
Total assists by the team - 75

The top 5 contributors is something that I think we have to plan and account for before the season starts. Penalties, OGs, CBs, DMs scoring a banger, etc. account for the rest and can't be planned for, that's where a lot of luck and subjectivity comes into play.

This year we have had the following players - Jesus, Sterling, Kevin, Foden, Bernardo, Torres, Gundogan and Mahrez. Sane and David left and Aguero has been pretty much injured for the entire year.

So now for 20/21 the current numbers are (with 10 games to go) -

1. Gundogan - 11
2. Sterling - 9
3. Mahrez - 7
4. Foden - 6
5. Jesus - 6

Total goals by top 5 contributors - 39
Total goals by team - 56

Now assists -
1. Kevin - 11
2. Sterling - 6
3. Mahrez - 4
4. Foden - 3
5. Jesus - 3

Total assists by top 5 contributors - 27
Total assists by the team - 39

I don't think we're Chelsea 04/05, so we need to score a little bit more to win. Let's say that we're not as free flowing as 18/19 or 17/18 but still win the title with the following numbers -

Total projected goals by team - 86
Total projected assists by the team - 68

We have to account for 86 goals and 68 assists. We've seen from above that top 5 players contribute to roughly 65-70% of the goals and assists.

So now the big task for you - go ahead and allocate 60 goals and 47 assists to any 5 of these 7 players - Jesus, Sterling, Foden, Bernardo, Torres, Gundogan and Mahrez. Your choice. Again like we saw above, the forwards and the CMs are usually the top 5 contributors with bench attacking players, CBs, DMs, etc. making up the rest of 30% goal contributions.

A simple list will be fine, just be realistic. For example, we're already 28 games through so don't assign 20 goals to Jesus. He's not going to score 14 in 10 games when he has scored 6 in 28. Or say assigning 15 assists to Bernardo when he has never achieved those numbers, not even in his best season at City.

This has bugged me for a while, so I'm really interested to hear your response.

Are we a better team without him ???

is he worth this new contract ??

should we look to cash in on him ???

He’s 30 had a list of injuries here, he’s looked well off the pace this season !!

He loses the ball more then anyone in the team, he can’t play the keep ball( always looking for a Hollywood pass)

he can’t get back fast enough , luke shaw went past him with ease !! Bloody luke shaw.

he’s finishing has been awful as well.

when he’s not playing the likes of Bernie, gundogan and cancelo all shine in attacking areas which they can’t occupy tor don’t get in the same areas because Kev is there and he’s the main creative outlet for the team when he plays.

Imho we are better without him ..
