I really hope those inolved have thickened their skin enough not to take the bulk of what is on this thread personally.
In some ways, that is an inevitability of design of any kind, every fud thinks they can do better. Without a clue of the constraints and pressures involved. Given that everyone with any bit of computer software thought their designs/mockups for the club badge a few years back were the bestest and tore into the official one, with the same cliche statements, and every year a new kit is released we see people's versions of what it Should look like etc, the criticisms are hardly surprising.
However the negativity is for me a bit much, the claims of it being embarrassing, shameful etc etc, c'mon, bigger bloody picture. It is a banner, aimed at Uefa in this shitter of situation, and both the message and the effort absolutely desrves recognition and support, wherever your design philosophy convictions lie (and expertise for those that claim it).
What i think it desperately needs, is context, and timing, the lack of that really works against it. And that unfortunately is down to the broader circumstances, of which the entire move and idea is a victim of and can't do anything about.
At the stadium, on an occasion of a night, with fans and cameras... whole other setting and picture, and it takes a slight leap of imagination to appreciate that.
And the muppets thing, a
totally sellable notion and has a catch that sticks. Think of the Israeli sketch artist that went viral with the caricature of the group of politicians as pigs, with enough parallels to make the connection, still gets mileage. With enough of a followthrough these types of things grow organically, and who know where they go, perhaps it leads to the muppets theme tune competing with the uefa anthem at home games one day! Heck im sure some thought inflatable bananas were embarrassing and immature, or the poznan unoriginal and laughable by other clubs, yet i love both.
There's fuck all point discussing whether there is enough or too much white space, what font they should have used, if elmo is a true enough redemblance if less is more or a bore, what other clubs might think or have done. It is an effort to show support to the club, show Uefa som cheek, and that's all that matters for me, so i'll go ahead and praise that.
