No real surprise that he struggled physically today. It was already apparent when he left in 2023 that the pace and physicality of the game were catching him out. We brought him back to give composure and create chances in the final third, which he has done wonderfully, but we hadn’t envisaged being without de Bruyne and Rodri. He’ll be fine against weaker teams, but we’ll have to use him cleverly against the better sides.

Bringing him back was an act of desperation and the result of two poor summer transfer windows.

He left at the right time in the first place.
