1980's Umbro City Shirts

1989/90 First Division David White signed match shirt worn v Man United 23rd September 1989.

The first of two seasons this style was worn but with the introduction of the football league sleeve patch for the 90/91 campaign.

1981-82 First Division match worn Bobby McDonald shirt.

This was the third season in a row this style was worn but the first with the circular badge following two seasons with the COA.

Bobby can be seen in the shirt during a 1-0 City victory over Coventry City on 12th December 1981.

Although City didn’t set the footballing world alight during the 1980’s we certainly had some fantastic shirts produced during the decade by Umbro. As a big collector of City match worn shirts and with the 1980’s being by far the favourite period of City shirts for me I thought I’d use this thread to showcase some of the 80’s style match shirts in my collection.

Starting off with this 1983/84 Second Division Kevin Bond match worn away shirt.

The big centre-half would appear 35 times during the campaign as Billy McNeill’s side finished in 4th place.

This style of shirts was first used during the 1982/83 campaign, our first with a shirt sponsor when Swedish car manufacturers SAAB donned the front, initially with a black sponsor on both the home and away shirts. This was changed to white on the home at the request of SAAB, who claimed it would give the sponsor better visibility and was dropped altogether from the away shirt but reappeared again in black on the away shirt during the 83/84 season.

‪1988/89 Second Division Trevor Morley unwashed match worn shirt from City’s 1989 Promotion clinching match away to Bradford City on the last day of the season.

Morley would score an 86th minute equaliser to secure City’s Promotion back to the old Division One in a 1-1 draw. ‬

1986-87 First Division Eric Nixon alternate goalkeeper match worn jersey....Shirt would also be used during the 88-89 campaign as a warm-up top by Andy Dibble although the club would now be sponsored by brother.
