Nothing is due as VAT applies at the point of purchase but the club released this statement at the time.
Manchester City are pleased to announce, following the government’s decision to temporarily lower the rate of VAT from 17.5 per cent to 15 per cent, that savings will be passed on to supporters through a number of price reductions.
All home match day adult priced tickets in the East and West stands will be subject to a £1 deduction and North and South stand tickets in the same category will be reduced by 50p. These changes will apply to tickets sold from the Wigan Athletic home fixture onwards, due to the fact that tickets for Everton, Hull City and the UEFA tie with Paris St Germain have already gone on sale.
Recognising the fact that it would be unfair to change the pricing structure for games for which some tickets have already been sold, Manchester City will donate the sum of the excess VAT for these fixtures to the Club’s nominated charities for the season.
The Club also recognises the loyalty of supporters who purchased their Seasoncards before the start of the 2008-09 campaign and who will not benefit from the recent VAT changes. It has therefore been decided to factor this reduction and potential savings from this season into next year’s Seasoncard prices.

The Club will reduce public catering food prices (where it is practicable to do so) by 2.5% on the majority of items. This will apply to outlets in and around the stadium, where all reductions will be made at the point of sale. The Club are awaiting an announcement later in the week relating to excise duty on alcohol and will notify fans of any changes arising therefrom .
VAT for Conference and Events bookings made from 1st December will be levied at the revised 15% rate and new bookings made with the Hospitality Department from the same date will also be subject to the reduced tax figure.
The Club are also pleased to confirm that fans purchasing retail items online and from Citystores (City of Manchester Stadium and Arndale branches) will benefit from increased discounts in excess of those arising from the government’s tax reduction. Current Citycard and Accesscard holders, previously entitled to 5% discount, will now receive a 10% discount on all items purchased and Seasonc ard holders will see their discount increase from 10% to 15% off all items sold. Once again, reductions will be apparent at the point of sale.
Talking of the price reductions a Club spokeswoman said,
“We at Manchester City are more than aware of the impact of the current uncertain economic climate on our fans. Wherever it has been possible to do so, we have dropped prices to reflect the VAT changes and in many instances have chosen to lower prices by more than the government’s 2.5% reduction rate. In fact, the double discount deal for supporters using our retail outlets, represents a fantastic deal for our supporters, particularly so with Christmas approaching and the financial implications it raises for families and individuals alike.
“We are also delighted to support our nominated Charities by donating the accumulated tax saving for the December fixtures held at our stadium. As we would be unable to pass on the VAT reductions to fans due to these games already being on sale, it would be inappropriate for the Club to benefit from these monies and therefore we are pleased to support our Charities in the fantastic work they do in and around the region.â€
