His role was a defensive one today, we lost the creativity of cancelo but he helped ensure the clean sheet. Doesn't need to try and be cancelo when it doesn't play to his strengths, keep to his game and he more than shows his worth to the team. Hope he gets berated for those absolutely moronic fouls though.
Walker is definitely the worst culprit for giving stupid fouuls away.

While he had suspect moments, he also wasn't fully told to play the same way as Cancelo either.

Clearly Cancelo had more freedom to come inside and even push towards the box, while Walker was told to make a back 3 with Dias and Laporte, and let Zinchenko inside.

It's just that Cancelo is better than Zinchenko at the inside role, and even though Walker is a better defender than Zinchenko, Zinchenko is then more comfortable on the ball, it's a dilemma for Pep on how to rotate this perfectly (probably not possible).

Not a technically gifted as Cancelo which is a problem in the style we now play
Not when you see that Burke is lightning quick and makes loads of good runs down the channels. Every game has a different style and game plan depending on who we’re playing.

When a team puts ten behind the ball even Ederson is on the half way line , if Cancelo had played at right back today he would have caused chaos , even Laporte spent more time in their half than ours.

Laporte's average position was just inside the City half and Walker's just inside the opponents' half. So they were virtually level with each other because when we were in possession they were the wider players in a back three with Dias central and a bit deeper in the City half.

Walker wasnt up to his usual very high standard and lets leave it at that , i dont take much interest in stats they can be manipulated to prove any point , didnt we have over 75% possession against Leicester and lose 2-5 ?

Let’s be honest he was terrible today. Passing negative and obvious, did not help Torres at all with the pace and type of passes he played. Positioning was pretty poor and then he had his usual brain farts.

You need to understand though that when Cancelo plays right back, our left back forms a back 3 with the centre backs in possession and when Walker plays, our left back is the one to push up into midfield and Walker forms the back 3. So comparing Walker and Cancelo and saying Walker wasn’t “causing chaos” is not even a fair comparison as they are playing different roles for us. The comparison in Cancelo’s absence is with Zinchenko. He was performing today’s ‘Cancelo role’. And you can also compare Walker with Zinchenko when Zin plays in a team with Cancelo in it. Zinchenko is much better than Walker in the build up but much inferior to Cancelo in the advanced role. That’s the way I see it.

Well said.

There's no manipulation in the facts I stated.

It's also a fact that Walker made the most tackles on the City team today and completed 95 out 101 passes with only Foden had a better % completion but on far less passes.

Some great points being made in this thread. In my view, Kyle has been a superb player for us but Cancelo offers a different type of skill and we could have done with it today in the sense that Kyle repeatedly went forward with the ball, was shown to his left and had to pass the ball backwards with his right. In the same situation, Cancelo is simply far more comfortable and can easily and often beat the player in front of him. Nevertheless, today was a day when some players were refreshed and will hopefully be fully rested for some important games to come.

Cancelo is just different gravy just now. Its no slant on kyle who's been a terrific player for us and on his day world class. But he is a bit limited technically and gives away so many daft fouls. Cancelo just offers that bit more for me, absolute champagne footballer

With Cancelo playing so well and Pedro Porro having a fantastic season at Sporting, Kyle needs to buck his ideas up as he's gone from indispensable to weak link incredibly quickly.

Walker was not great today but it is a long season. He was on fire for the first 10 games or so when Other players were either out with covid or out of form.

Great position to have both players available at RB.

And Cancelo can do both sides and look good.

Defensively we are in a very good place, we've Stones and Dias centrally, Laporte who can replace either, or play left back, and Ake once he's fit can also do both. Cancelo and Walker great on the right, and Cancelo can also do left, and Walker can play centrally too. Zinchenko has been very good on the left too, because he can push in centrally in midfield.

And we have Mendy.

Walker is an athlete, he will never be as technically gifted as Cancelo.

Today I think was a chance to rest Cancelo with Burnley & Liverpool coming up and then play Walker against Swansea
