Pep is the greatest manager in history. I don’t pretend to know better than anyone, least of all him.
I have watched Bernie for the past two seasons though. I have also watched Pep consistently play him RWF and Bernie fail to deliver. I don’t think I have delusions of grandeur if I wonder, why the best manager in history, is continuing to play a guy RWF, who doesn’t consistently create or score goals.
Plenty thought it was time to thank Bernie for his service and for him to leave. Instead, after 2 terrible seasons, he is given the armband and it is baffling.
Like most, I am a firm believer in the captain being one of, if not the best player in the side and someone who more often than not, is going to be in the starting XI. The last 2 seasons say this isn’t Bernie. Now we have a similar scenario to the Walker situation, where Kyle was given the armband, even though for the most part he wasn’t deserving of his starting place in the side. That worked out well.
This season Bernie will need to find form he hasn’t had for a long time, or 1 of 2 scenarios will likely play out…
1. He is playing shite most weeks but continues to be picked because he is captain. Fantastic.
2. Our captain is on the bench more often than not. Great.
I guess we will just have to hope he’s been having a rest for 2 years and is ready to step it up again. Maybe Pep is showing his genius and the captaincy is the kick up the arse Bernie has long needed. Fingers crossed.
