2006-07 Season

Tin hat time:

While I fully agree that our lack of goals at home contributed to a thoroughly mediocre season, we actually got some good wins on the road which ultimately led to us securing safety with games to spare. We unexpectedly won 3-1 at Villa when everyone was expecting O'Neill to do a number on us, managed back to back away wins on 2 occasions - firstly over Christmas at Sheffield United and West Ham, and again in March when we won at 'Boro (something that hardly happened in those days) and then Newcastle.

If you take the home form in isolation then yes, it was a shocker of a season, but away from home we weren't that bad really.

Beating Everton on New Years Day was my highlight. Not because we beat Everton, which was rare enough, but seeing Samaras score twice!

Although I'd disagree with the OP about the tenth series of Red Dwarf, I thought it was better than the 8th series, which was dire. Off topic, yes, but I felt it was a point worth making...

i went to every single league home game that season.

i always thought "this will be the week we change it" every week. i was longing for the excitement of being at maine road 1999-2002 again and that says a lot.

i remember beating derby 1-0 at home, michael johnson scorer, the first home game the following season and everybody going fucking mental.

how times have changed.

If you've never read it, I did this about that era:

<a class="postlink" href="http://liamwright1987.blogspot.co.uk/2012/12/2007-year-in-life.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://liamwright1987.blogspot.co.uk/20 ... -life.html</a>

And the OP is slightly wrong.

The "Some Might Say" banner is mine. And I had it made in about March 2009, more with the idea that the media and non-City supporting world would say "you'll win the league one day" but it still looked miles away back then. It might have been after the 1-0 loss away to West Ham under Hughes that made me go through with buying it after considering it for awhile.

I don't think I've taken it to any games since we won the league.

Enjoyed that, Liam, rally took me back.

Recent media guff about a club in crisis makes this smashing piece even more timely. As the on-trend kids would say, we should Check Our Privilege, because this was the opposite of fun.

And compare the response of the home crowd to going 1-0 down at the final home game of that season to more recent responses elsewhere.

03:00 in. Lump in throat time.

The away form picked up a bit until we were safe and we had FA Cup games at home which we won. It wasn't as though home league games took place in a vacuum, and it was a successful season given the possibilities.

Charlton haven't been back since.

Fond memories of Stuart Pearce trying to claim Ousmane Dabo was the signing of the season.

Also, at the risk of being permanently banned, I loved the kit from this season with the white sleeves and blue shorts.
