4% of the worlds population

24% of the worlds covid deaths

You don’t think that’s a failure of the administration?
I'm not one for defending Trump and his handling has certainly been diabolical, but you could apply this comparison to other countries such as the UK, France, Spain. All have a deaths per million of 500 - 700. Plus we're only half way through the pandemic, there's still a long way to go.

I'm of the opinion that it would have been bad whoever was in charge, although based on population densities I expected the US at this stage to have a lower deaths /million than the UK, say around 500 to our 650.

Yet if you look at the US state by state, the top 10 for Covid infection rates are around 35,000 per million, 3 times the UK rate. All of those states are Republican led following Trump’s misguided advice. Many are mostly rural which should make it easier to control. That’s a clear indictment of Trump’s abject handling of it compared to our slightly less abject handling of it.

They are also the wealthiest country in the world, which should have applied considerable downward pressure to the infection rates, in conjunction with the population density to which you refer.

Fair comment. I'm still loathe to blame all the deaths on Trump's government though. Still think we've a way to go in this plus a lot of the deaths are down to poor underlying health of the population and healthcare systems which are a cumulation of multiple administrations. If Germany's numbers are indicative of their excess deaths, then there's clearly something amiss in other countries. Also, would those republican states mentioned have acted any different under different leadership ... I'm not too sure, they do things their way because they're indoctrinated that the US does everything best.

of course it wwouldnt. Some of the state govts were doing what Trump wanted them to do. His view on it was shown to be ludicrous the week that the White House all caught it. Multiply that by hundreds of thousands and youve got the reason why more mature leadership would have made a difference

I agree better leadership would have made a difference but still think some states would have pushed against national orders. Perhaps it would depend on who the GOP candidate would have been running against Clinton, assuming she was going for a second term.

It's difficult to know exactly the effect that Trump has had on it, but presumably not having binned the epidemic plans would have made a difference to start with. I do think that there is a significant effect on the bullishness of governors when the President stands up and declares something to be a hoax and fake, but again difficult to quantify.

My recollection (which may be faulty) is that the US surge was after the European surge. It does appear that the examples on South Korea and Western Europe were ignored by the US govt.

It appears that way because they were. Trump politicized this crisis, refused to lead or to become educated about it, spread disinformation regularly, downplayed it by his own admission, continues to host super-spreader events, criticizes science and scientists, and doesn’t thank or show respect to many healthcare workers other than the doctors who saved him (as he made them sign non-disclosure agreements).

Does he deserve all the blame for the spread? No. Does he deserve some of it? Absolutely. Would a different president have handled it differently, and better? Almost certainly.
