He's bad at geography doesn't mean he is bad at computers. My main reason to ask is I am friends with a Trumper who uncritically repeats all of his election claims. I'd like to be able to challenge his assertions
"I am really looking forward to City's season. I'm confident we'll win the league this year. After all, we've won it before. And I know a lot about City. I've been a fan for a long time."

"Yes, the side looks pretty good. I'm excited too. Why are you so optimistic?"

"Well, here's the evidence: we have KDB of course, and the best manager in the world. And then there's Harry Kane, Mo Salah and that pointy-chinned fellow, Vardy. I think we'll score a lot of goals."

"Errrrrrrrrrrr . . . but those guys don't play for City."

"Well, just because I'm bad at knowing who plays for City doesn't mean I'm bad at football predictions."

Trotsky explained or Trotsky opined?
In my eyes explained, in others he opined.

Trotsky's explanation of Fascism is seminal in my opinion. Umberto Eco's 14 attributes is an excellent summation again in my opinion.

I am sure other sources are available. Orwell for one is very good, then again he was brilliant at everything.

He wants to run in 4 years, so needs to walk the tightrope between not destroying faith in democracy as he will need their votes, but also sucking up to trump enough to keep trumps base on his side
Just out of curiosity, what office do you think that T.C. might run for, or, in fact, be qualified for? And I realize, with having lived through the last four years of the US government, that qualified is a term used quite loosely.

If this current debacle doesn't demonstrate to people how the US constitution is unfit for purpose, then they are totally beyond help.
Agreed, but I remember thinking this every 4 years since at least the Reagan years (when I became interested), and they’ve done diddly every time.

maybe Biden et al, will push for democratic processes, but I doubt it.

republicans possibly even less in favour of change, as their general base becomes ever older , smaller (percentage wise) and increasingly concentrated in non-urban states.

But what do you suggest? If the President isn't going to abide by the rules, laws, traditions, and history of his predecessors, and his party is going to be complicit in ignoring them and enable such, what Constitution is fit for purpose? Anyhow, I'm not sure I agree -- the courts are doing what they are supposed to thus far; this isn't going anywhere. It's a pantomime. A pantomime that will allow Trump and his supporters to live in a fantasy land where they had the election stolen. And -- far more importantly -- will allow Trump and those in on the Trump con to fleece the snot out of the hapless.
I don’t know. Not thought about it enough, but I believe it’s far too unwieldy and anachronistic. Why such a long transition period? It’s a relic of a bygone age So much can go wrong in three months. Especially where an orderly and civilised transfer of power is being wantonly obstructed.

Not saying our system is any better btw. They are both wank.

Fair point on the lame duck transition period.

I can defiteky see the Union spolitting in some way in the next 10-15 years. Used to think it would take longer.

Think your judiciary has been pretty decent down the years, but it’s becoming increasingly politicised.

If 80% of Republicans think the election was fraudulent (really?) what do you do if you're the only one in a family of five that think the other four have gone crazy.

I'm told one American relative (KS) might have voted for Trump only because she was worried about the trouble if he lost...

I know that your tale is only another internet account of an event that may or may not be true. No reason to disbelieve you by the way, but tbh, I shouldn’t care. It has nothing to do with me personally. I’ve no idea why I’ve invested so much emotionally, in this.
I spent a lot of time since Covid at the start of the year, maybe even before that. I watched a lot of CNN and spent a fair amount of time in here asking questions and offering varying degrees of opinion.

But I’ve started to cut down in CNN. I don’t post so much in here.

Why?
I actually got a renewed faith in the American people after the result of the election and particularly the lengths people had to go to have their vote counted.

But what is going on now leaves me simultaneously livid and incredulous that your system allows it. The party are complicit in what looks from the outside like a subversion of democracy. And everyone is still pussyfooting around him and them with the language that is being used to describe this attempted coup.
Thst goes for foreign leaders also.

I understand diplomacy, but FFS. This is just not right. No credence or legitimacy of any sort should given to these totally bogus law suits. The legal route that some say he is entitled to exhaust. It’s obvious it’s a delay tactic to keep him out of prison. And probably a lot more than him judging by the enabling he is getting from the Reps.

This is lunacy and I find it difficult to watch anymore.
