Yup.

As a suffering Falcons fan it's the only time I've been happy to see Atlanta do what it does best; build that lead then piss it all away.

Interesting. Although presumably you'd have to publicly admit to particular crimes in order to pardon yourself from them? Otherwise you could just pardon yourself from any and all future crimes.

The self-pardon issue is laid out in detail in "The Final Days." Nixon of course had no political capital with which to do this and cared enough about the future of the country and the Republican party to simply resign and hope Ford would pardon him, but he was also resigned to the possibility of going to jail (because he was a man who felt monumentally sorry for himself). But his lawyers had researched this and it was among his 8 or 9 final options.

Now maybe things have changed but I also don't think we've needed to confront this in nearly 50 years.

I haven’t seen any recent legal analysis that holds that such a “blank check” self-pardon would hold up in court. But I may have missed it — do you have any links to recent work? Genuinely curious to read the reasoning behind it.

I’ve read it and I have also been told by a few lawyers that analysis has changed. But, again, I may have not seen recent confirmations it would likely actually hold up in court.

Edit: I am specifically referring to a “blank check” self-pardon, by the way, which is different to a self-pardon (which could also fail, but there is some reputable analysis that asserts it could hold up).

Unfortunately, Trump doesn't need facts.

A strong assertion will do just fine, reality not withstanding - and unfortunately many of his followers will believe whatever Trump says - and his stranglehold over the Republican party ensures that very little pushback from the Right will occur.

Suffering Falcons fan, eh? Where we you when they (with Gary Anderson's help) prevented the best Vikings team in my lifetime (14-2) from reaching the Super Bowl? :D

Fair enough -- I think in the end it doesn't matter whether he does it (which I do think he will) and succeeds or fails -- just doing it will be monumental self-dealing, and he can't protect himself from SDNY regardless.
 
I don`t live in The States and I`ve only been there on holiday 3 times.

I hate Donald Trump from a far because he`s a despicable **** just like Kellyanne Conway, Mitch McConnell, Tucker Carlson, Paula White, Kenneth Copeland, Bill Barr, Ben Carson, Sarah Huckerbee-Saunder and the rest of his disgraceful Lying band that spread his lies and helped empower him.

I`ve said since before Trump was elected that he was a ****. I think that has been proved time and time again by what he tweets and by what comes out of his mouth. He will do as much damage as he possibly can because he`s a ****.

I can`t swear that Joe Biden will be a Good President, I can only hope but I believe Joe Biden is a decent human being and wish him the best of luck. America and The American people will need him to do so. Its going to be a hard task after Trump has poisoned the mind`s of almost half the Country.

Agreed. It’s the reason I have said I do not think he resigns.

And that legal protection is only one of a few vital shields/advantages he gives up when he leaves office.
 
Looking good so far. I am just curious to know now. What happens if Biden wins and Trump refuses to leave office in January? Is there a process to throw him out or will it go to court?
