You miss my point entirely. I simply want to know what the sigma is. This is completely lacking in the post. Without which, there's no reason to suspect that the results are unexpected at all. And if the results aren't unexpected, why did the Twitter poster even bother to mention them?

For whatever reason, you've now developed the idea that I don't understand statistics. Do you understand statistics?

I am a (now retired) economist and data scientist.

And I haven't missed your point, I am saying that you are misinterpreting the post to mean something it does not. Descriptive analysis is different to prescriptive analysis.

Sensational posts cite data that seem to imply something that's not conclusively true.

The post you quoted is akin to something along the lines of this (a made up hypothetical scenario but completely analogous to the current situation) :

"Recent results in physics indicate the existence of a new, heretofore undiscovered, particle. Based on numerous particle collisions, scientists at the LHC have noticed that it's more likely than not that a new elementary particle has been discovered."

Which is pretty much just bullshit reporting without backing relevant statistical details. If you want to label the Twitter post you cited as descriptive - well, OK. I'd label it as sensational - until such time as backing analysis proves that it's particularly unusual.

You’d think during the final group games the TV stations would have a split screen option on one of their channels. Most people have massive teles these days so it would be a good option.

Yes... but many home TV setups include picture in picture - independent of broadcast.

Anyhow, I'd like to have the ability to view each broadcast in isolation - free of knowledge about what's transpiring in the other match.

I’ve no idea what that means but BT Sports did it years ago with the Champions League and the NFL do it every week on Redzone, so it’s clearly not a problem.

Agreed - it's not a technical problem.

However, if the broadcast you are watching flashes graphics showing the score in the other game and meanwhile the commentators frequently announce the other game score, it's nearly impossible to watch one game without knowing what's going on in the other game. And this is likely to be the case watching the USA Fox broadcasts.

Well that would be pointless anyway, as the players will know the score in the other game and will react accordingly.

To me WC's are to be watched in the off season and in the heat of a beautiful UK summer :-) I want the WC to feel like a completely standalone 'low stakes' event I can focus on fully for the fun of it (happy if England do well, but not gutted if we don't). I've got some personal distractions at the moment too, but fundamentally I value club football more than international and so it's the really timing that has disengaged me.

Yup - I'd like to (probably not possible) eliminate this possibility (ban cell phones/electronic communication from managers/staff - but this is easily thwarted by fans in the stands using hand signals or other forms of communication).

Still, it's fair as all 4 teams know what's going on in the other game, and no side has a temporal advantage.
 
Not going to start a new thread, but I would be curious to know - what do people think of this World Cup so far (I believe we are half-way through).

Can we keep the views to the football and leave aside the politics and indeed the fact it is in November/December.

Purely on the football, the stadiums, the TV coverage, what do people think?

My view is I think its been pretty good. Yes there have been several nil:nils, but on the other hand there have been some exciting high scoring games and quite a few big shocks.

The air-conditioning seems to be working - the games are not as frenetic as PL matches, but international matches never are, even in colder places. The fans seem to be there in numbers and I love to see the people dressed up with the colours of their countries & faces painted etc. Plus like in previous world cups the people on the cameras seem to have a knack of finding attractive ladies jumping up and down during quiet spells (I like the jumping up and down).

We all know Foden should be playing.
We all knew Ederson wouldn’t be.

KDB is being misused in a sub par team. Cancelo looks suspect defensively and Dias and Aké have been below their standards.

It’s natural for a few players not to play well moving to a new team with no prep straight into a high pressure tournament, but on the other hand some players have.
