2022 World Cup Discussion

I'm not convinced the games have been dull, I've found them more interesting than the opening round of games at previous tournaments. They've not been scintillating, but neither have they been dull.

The abysmal attendances and atmosphere have been a complete embarrassment to both fifa and Qatar. They paid a hell of a lot of money to get this world cup, the least they can do is ensure there's enough interest to fill what are modest sized stadiums and have them not leave at halftime. Complete shit show in that regard and has to be the poorest turnout in world cup history. I don't know why it hasn't been talked about more in the media.

Direct result of that has been lifeless atmospheres, no colour in the stands, that Brazil game tonight was the closest we've seen to a genuine world cup crowd and that was only half of one side.

Best thing to come out of it so far is without doubt the referees extra time initiative, seeing adequate time added for bullshit time wasting and other incidents has been a well overdue change, let's hope that's implemented across the domestic leagues soon.

An unintended benefit of so much extra time is the broadcasters were not prepared for it at all in their scheduling. there's about 15-20 extra minutes per game now which means barely any time for the likes of drugs cheat Rio to tell us how he called something to himself off air beforehand every single game.

Yeah, there’s been 16 games played

2 big shocks in those, a few other good competitive games and a few walkovers.

You have to expect a few dull games out of 16, it’s the nature of the sport but all in all we’ve already had some good games and really good moments/shocks.

Not sure that is a completely accurate portrayal but am happy to accept it's your personal view. I am no world cup fan, but have watched a few games.

Much the same as other world cups as far as I can see. Some good games. Some crap games. Some good teams not up to speed yet. Some of the smaller teams working harder than expected. All regular group game stuff.

I don't think FIFA or Qatar need to be embarrassed by the way it's turning out, other than the decision to award. Not because of human rights or what is or isn't legal there, just from a football perspective. There is no football tradition and no real potential of one developing. Probably explains the comment on crowds/atmosphere which, by the way, doesn't seem that bad to me watching at home.

I generally agree with your comments. There does seem to be a cohort of people, led by certain parts of the media who are determined not too enjoy this World Cup. Whilst I fully understand the objections to Qatar and it’s governance the actual football, apart from a couple of games, has been good.
 
Group stages were a mix of quality, as they always are, with some decent and some boring games. Very notable for the introduction of large amounts of injury time, and some real fight from 'lesser' teams

Thought Mbappe, Alfonso Davies, Bellingham, Masiala, Vinicius and Gavi all played very well.

Really hope Foden gets a chance to shine and show he belongs on that list of exciting footballers.
