24 | Joško Gvardiol - 2025/26

Really poor for the penalty. Don't think he was anywhere near as bad as some are suggesting overall though. A lot is asked of him in that back 4. I said pre-match a little breather would do him good whilst we've got a fit ake and stones. We'll regret not using them whilst they're fit.

Good instincts for the goal and very intelligent to get himself out of the way for fodens winner.

Agree he’s been off this season compared to last, perhaps in part due to injury. And today was poor and he cost us a goal with the penalty.

But the story of his game today isn’t complete without mentioning his jump to clear the way for Foden’s goal. Great awareness, great execution and athleticism.

For defenders, brain fart is the worst short coming. And unfortunately there is no cure for brain fart. It is not a matter of maturity, it is more of an instinct of the players nerves. For team mates, it is like you have a timer bomb just next to you. And he could make it like he can suddenly become playing for the other team any moment from anywhere. It is not like he tumbles or make mistakes, it is like he suddenly wants to play smart in the most stupid way. It is very stressful for his team mates.

Not sure what some were watching. Badly timed tackle for that pen, yes, that was poor, but he was good otherwise, IMO. Played especially well in the 1st half when he stopped a few dangerous attacks, scored a goal as well. He got out of Fodens way for the winner, yes, but also he played that long ball to Nunes that resulted in the 1st Foden goal as well.

That’s what I saw too.

Other than the penalty I thought he had a good game today! Great ball for the first goal, scored, and got out of the way well for fodens goal.

I think some of the criticism is a bit harsh. He's a great player but He isn't playing well this season, that's true. Maybe something off the pitch is taking his mind and concentration off the game. he's certainly not at his usual high standard.

Ake & Stones the answer, what’s the question?

Makes me laugh these comments about him being shit because of a few mistakes and lapses in concentration.

He’s 23.

For context, Jonny Boulders was 22 when he joined us in 2016 and it was widely accepted that mistakes were going to be part of his game until they weren’t.

The same should apply to this guy. One of the best left footed centre halves in world football right now and will continue to be - or be the best - for the next 10+ years.

Unbelievable some of the comments I see about him on here. If you can’t see his quality then I’m glad you’re not part of the scouting system at the club.

His pass for the 1st goal to Nunes was really good

He scored a goal and caused more threat in corners than Haaland on other occasions

1 bad tackle that caused the penalty

Yet, some people thinks he isn't good enough

He is an outstanding prospect but we have to accept that players will make mistakes, especially young players. It does not make them shit or never good enough, it just means they made a mistake, as every player in history has.

Best player on the pitch first half worst in the second ,most of the criticism comes from the fact that some want some guy who is quick but plays like a ufc wrestler playing.

He makes too many though. Seen a few comments like "He played well apart from the penalty." And that's precisely the point, there is no point playing well for 99% of a game if you are going to drop bollocks that potentially lead to goals. He also has a terrible habit of letting the ball bounce when the opposition play it long.

Given some of the players we've signed in the last 2 years, I don't think our scouting system is something to brag about tbh.

He wasn’t signed in the last 2 years. Presuming you mean the last 2 Summer windows.
I'd argue our last 3 summer windows haven't been great, which includes the summer 23 when Gvardiol was brought in. So If you want to be pendantic the last 29 months or so haven't been great transfer wise.
