It was a very uncharacteristic substitution from Pep and the only reason I can come up with is sentimentality. It wasn’t a direct reason we lost the game but I’m sure our chances to win in extra time would be much bigger with Mahrez and Rodri on the pitch and impossible to know what would’ve happend in normal time had he not made that change but we probably don’t lose.
Sentimental to what end, though? At that point we were going through, so it wasn't a case of it being Fernandinho's last appearance in the Champions League for us (although obviously that's how it panned out). One last game at the Bernabeu? Seems very unlikely to me
If Pep were so driven by sentimentality then wouldn't he have started Dinho in the Champions League Final last season? Just doesn't add up as an animus for the decision
Maybe Pep just wanted to kill some time with a late substitution?
