Unfortunately, if we play the inverted right back moving into midfield, Stones is the only one of our centre-backs who looks comfortable on the right of the remaining defensive 3 - but playing him on the right means you lose a little of the build-up play he gives you from the central position.

I've said it before and I'll say it again- the biggest problem for me is his MOTOR...
Idk if it's a conditioning issue or just his mentality(I think the latter) but he needs to give 100% ALL of the time. Easy to say in hindsight perhaps but I do think Laporte, Dias, or Ake would have kept running down that ball vs pulling up against United for example, and made it just that much more difficult for the refs to try and fuck us over.

Let's not forget Akanji was brought in as cover for a modest 15M. He has played more than he should due to injuries, mainly Stones and Laporte. He has his faults but on the whole he's done ok overall.

He's a good defender, but a bit passive at times, has dipped in form just like the overall team, Dias and Stones are the only CBs that can get us into a good run of form. He’s ok as a squad player if needed, I actually thought he looked better at the start of the season, but then I suppose you can say that about a lot of our players recently.
But you can see why his previous club let him go for £15m too. Very replaceable for similar money.
He’s probably played way more than was intended because of injuries and I think for the most part he’s done a decent enough job, but at times you can see he’s probably a little bit short of the level we would want, especially on the ball.

He’s a decent signing purely because of the low fee we paid for him and he offers decent cover, but I don’t think he’d have got the minutes he has if Dias and Laporte had remained fit.
The sooner Dias is back to Partner Stones, the better.. and going off current form, those 2 alongside Lewis and Ake would be the defence I’d settle on.

Spot on. He didn’t know what to do with Kane dropping short, and when he did get tight and engage him in that scenario, Kane just held him off or rolled him. It was a really poor performance from Akanji, his positioning was just sloppy all game.
As others have said, he’s a 15m back up option. It’s unfortunate that we have had to use him as much as we have done, hopefully Dias can get back to fitness and form. Not sure what is going on with Laporte for that matter though.

I suspect Laporte is on Pep's hit list.He always appears self absorbed and motivated to me,i think he will be off as soon as the right club comes calling.
