Spot on. He didn’t know what to do with Kane dropping short, and when he did get tight and engage him in that scenario, Kane just held him off or rolled him. It was a really poor performance from Akanji, his positioning was just sloppy all game.

As others have said, he’s a 15m back up option. It’s unfortunate that we have had to use him as much as we have done, hopefully Dias can get back to fitness and form. Not sure what is going on with Laporte for that matter though.
Not disagreeing with that assessment at all, but Kane has generally done this against us for several years now regardless of who we were playing at centre back

It feels like he's the first name on Pep's team sheet this season. He really struggles against anyone with a bit of a physical presence. Toney being the best example.

Spot on mate. Toney absolutely destroyed him before the WC.

Kane had him last night as did Rashford at OT. He was unsure at Anfield as well. Sadly he is back up only.

Can only think hes giving his all in training. His on pitch performances dont justify his constant selection.

I think he has played pretty well. At everyone's peak, he is probably 4th or 5th choice. But he is more consistent than all the better players at keeping his level.

John, Dias, Laporte, Ake, in tht order. But he is more consistent than all of them (even if his best is far below theirs) and he is as good on the ball as any of them. And uses the ball more safely than all of them.

For all those reasons I see why he is currently the first choice. I expect him to keep it until he loses form

Akanji will benefit from Rico Lewis being in the side. No walker makes us very susceptible to the counter, akanji is probably the quickest of the centre backs so that goes in his favour.

Considering Aké's improvement from season 1 to 2, I'm willing to be optimistic that Akanji will truly find his form soon too.

It is strange to me that he became the scapegoat at half time, especially on twitter and in the match thread, because he was in no way at fault for either of the goals and in general, i thought was alright first half! thought he had an alright game overall. thought he had 1 mistake in the game which was being far too tight to kane during that perisic chance that lewis saved, but other than that i thought he was good and kept kane relatively quiet.

think he's getting a lot of stick and people are looking out to get him and i am not sure why.
