25 | Manuel Akanji - 2024/25

I said weeks ago that he is playing like he no longer gives a shit. I’ve seen nothing since to change my mind. I like Akanji and he’s been a great signing, especially when you consider value-for-money but his current half-arsed attitude is doing my nut in.
Who knows at this point, he could just not be fully fit just like the rest of the defenders who keep going down.

He's clearly not properly fit, and he's being left high and dry all the time. The suicidal way we are set up at the moment will make any defender look shit, we are constantly asking them to defend 1v1 at best and often outnumbered and expect them to win 100% of their duels. It's crazy tactics and no defender on the planet can be asked to defend like that and look competent over a season.

The criticism all of our centre backs have received this season is totally unjust imo, they're going into each game severely handicapped, the idea all of them have suddenly turned to shit simultaneously is ridiculous. That doesn't absolve them of regular mistakes they're all making but our centre backs aren't the route of the problem here.

Shocking defender. I’ll probably get some stick for this, but I really don’t think he’s good enough. Extremely passive in the box, loses his man extremely often, very weak and constantly gets beaten in the air. According to DataMB his defensive duel % is in the first percentile across all centre backs in the top 5 leagues (for anyone that doesn’t know: it means that 99% of CBs in the top 5 leagues has a higher duel % than him). Shocking stat.
Gets caught ball watching far too often and he’s very average on the ball, his attempts at playing the Stones role has proved that any time he’s tried. Personally think he always looked poor for Dortmund. Would make a decent RB backup, but we need better defenders than Akanji in the middle. The difference between Dias and Akanji at the back is night and day
