27 | Matheus Nunes - 2025/26

Best player? Seriously???

Spent more times on his arse than anything else, and lost his man for their equaliser, although it was Ake who played him onside.

Hopefully Khusa will be back next weekend.
Please tell me this is a very good parody that I've missed the build up towards and not serious.

I was as worried as everyone when it was announced that he was coming on. And his first 5 minutes were a bit of a nightmare.
But fair play, after that he had a decent game.

I cannot understand the negativity towards Nunes, towards the end of last season he made the right back position his own and played there with no winger ahead of him, he played really well during that period, his defending improved dramatically and he was effective in the attacking end also. That was until he for no reason got dropped by the "over thinking" Pep for the cup final, a totally abysmal decision in my opinion, Since then he has only played the Brighton match, in which he was very good until the handball incident, if Walker had made this mistake it would be quickly forgotten, but some people like to have Nunes as a scapegoat. I would restore Nunes to RB and put Khus at CB instead of Dias, who has played better in the past couple of games, but his distribution is still poor, Gvardiol and Khus would be dynamite pairing at CB

Him making the right back position his own is not a good a good thing.
He’s shite - he might be able to run up and down but he’s not up to it

We'll agree to disagree, I guess

But let’s explore. What do you disagree with? He was bought as a midfielder, clearly not up to it so we put him at right back

He’s given away lots of goals and is 27, not some kid. I think there should be consequences for being not up to it - Khusanov is well better. Uncle Mendez should have sorted him a move

I’m not complaining about him today just that he shouldn’t be here at all

I really like Nunes. I think Khusonov is a better RB though. I'd start Nunes as RW as much as possible. I think he could be awesome there.

But Pep prefers Bernardo or Foden. I prefer both of them more centrally.

Sometimes you can see a player is out of his depth despite him doing ok.

I don’t think people criticise him, dislike him or don’t appreciate his effort,

He seems both likeable and will try his best to follow the instructions given by Pep.

Our issue is the failing of the club to secure a better right back.

We should have one and Kush should be back up to that.

Nunes should only be playing in an emergency not second choice and for awhile first choice.

He is a decent player who should be playing in midfield for a team where he is first choice, not being a RB for us

If we are debating whether he should be 2nd choice or 3rd choice right back, that says to me that he shouldn’t be here at all. A 3rd choice right back should be a youth player not a 50mil international who can’t hack it in midfield over 2 years on

Basically Rico

I actually think Nunes would be sellable, Zo don’t think he is on silly wages and 2 years left at end of this season.

He is a good age and book value will be about £20 million

Shaky start but then improved a lot and was faultless in the last 30 minutes or so.

Player performs well, but forum members who have been saying he is poor cannot accept that so trot out the 'yes but he isn't good enough and shouldn't be here' lines. We have seen this again and again. The cycle is:
He's shite
That was better but he isn't good enough
That was better but he needs to do it consistently now
That was shite, exactly as I said (one mediocre game)
At least he is more consistent
He is doing a bit better now

We rarely reach the praise point of humble pie = Plodri probably the only example.

The match-day thread contained the usual 'Oh, that's the game done' posts as soon as he came on. Well, it wasn't the game done, and he played well.

Nunes has been a very capable squad player for some time now.
Squads of superstars are rarely successful because nobody wants to be rotated nor spend time on the bench.

To start on a positive note, I agree with you that Khusanov would be a better right back, but he has not cottoned on to the attacking part of the position yet, whereas Nunes is quite good in the attacking half.
Nunes was bought as a good footballer with potential to get better, "clearly not up to it" you say, my opinion is that given a run of a few matches he could be quite good, as he was yesterday, when you state that "he's shite", I just turn off to such an argument and that is why I said we should agree to disagree.
What Oldius says in his post above is quite relevant.

Average players who try really hard usually win a lot of fans over, but it doesn't mean that they belong in a team with serious ambitions of being the best. A lot of Zin
