27 | Matheus Nunes - 2025/26

Is there another player who will be more fun to root for next season? He’s taken savage shite from the fanbase, he’s endured a cruel public Pep quote, and he’s happily adapting to a new role with a great attitude and a smile on his face. And he saved the season with the Villa goal.

Aside from maybe Rodri regaining form, would there be a more rewarding player success story than Nunes if he can pull it off?

Our back had prime Eddie round walker vinny was still there as was stones Dias and and who where all playing better and where much fitter also we had forward players who ran back and helped out but last season with nunes we got rinsed many times including the derby and this season we are rebuilding a new team . Nunes is a good pkayer and
For id not get rid but he should be back up to a proper right back for us and not him Lewis and arkanji sharing the role . Maybe I’m wrong but let’s revusit this in December if we don’t sign one .

Nunes is our new Mahrez..

He produces numbers.. yet gets hate from shit tons of people and when he leaves we won't be able to fill his void!
Some people have to have someone. Hell, we won 5-2, destroying one of Europe's big names, and in all the joy were complaints about Akanji, who did very little wrong. Nunes and Rico are just the new names on a long list of players deemed not good enough despite our immense success and record-breaking achievements. We all have favourite players, and we all have those who we don't rate as highly, but the venom is beyond my comprehension. It goes away for periods, and is replaced with faint praise, and calls for 'now he needs to do that every week', but as soon as a mistake is made, the venom returns. I think it is rather sad.

Dias wasn't with us in 17/18, Otamendi was our #1 CB as Kompnay (17 starts) and Stones (16 starts) had injury hit seasons that made us move for Laporte (9 starts) in Jan

I think Gvardiol and Dias is not far off that level, obviously we dont have Walker but at least we've added a strong LB on paper in Ait-Nouri

Walker - Otamendi - Kompany - Delph

Vs

Nunes - Dias - Gvardiol - Ait Nouri

If you had to pick 4 players from those 2 back-lines you're taking 2 from each

Spot on.

Apart from my pearls of wisdom, that has to be a strong contender for post of the week. I don't know what it is with those types of posters; they just seem to get a buzz from scapegoating players. Strange behaviour. I guess the anonymity of the Internet gives them courage. Would they do it at the ground? I doubt it.

Actually, put down on paper bluntly like that, I find myself, with some surprise, hesitating.

Our current back four should, potentially, be better than that original one. I regard Rúben as a better central defender than Otamendi ever was (even with Rúben's weaknesses) and he's certainly a better leader. I'll say it — the best central defence pairing we've had since the takeover has been prime Rúben with prime Johnny. That was a magnificent pairing.
Delph was a much more limited player in terms of what he could do on the ball than Ait Nouri (apparently, it's early days) or even Gvardiol. Prime Walker on the face of it looks clearly stronger than Nunes. But Kyle was never the best in either his ball play or his passing. He was a tremendous athlete, who could overlap or underlap at will in his best years and put good crosses over to create havoc. In defence, he would be quite often skinned, but had the speed to turn and actually catch the winger up, put in a good tackle, because he's a bit of a unit physically, and take the ball back off him. Nunes will always be suspect on those grounds (and I still don't think he's a prime right-back) but he can do more with the ball, and I was impressed by how he learnt about the trade on the job last season, and went from being a complete liability to someone who knows his weaknesses and is therefore more careful to not put himself in a position where they'll be nakedly exposed.
By the way, I have never understood the utter contempt that Rico seems to get on this forum. He is not a proper right back, but he's a decent footballer (Pep seems to think so, too, incidentally). If we get a prime right back, a proper one, his days will be numbered, because he's simply not good enough to play at the level we require in midfield. Nunes, I think, will become back-up at right-back. And that will be it for Rico. I believe he'll get a decent PL team to go to. Wish him well. Seems a very nice lad, too.

were complaints about Akanji, who did very little wrong.
Did you watch the same game?

Shite in the air which nearly gave them a goal and about 100yrds behind the defensive line playing them onside for their second goal for starters. It’s ok to say he was shit, same way that he’s got praise when he’s played well.

We won't get a better RB than Nunes as there is none available.

He had an incredible development at RB even if it's difficult to see or accept for many on here ;)

We loved Walker for his pace and his physical and confident displays.

Nunes - as Pep just said - has pace and great acceleration with his long legs, is aggressive in 1v1s, offers tons more forward than Walker ever had and now has understood to deliver the cross bang on the 6 yrd line for the easy tap in - our forwards only need to be there...

He has great ball control as a midfielder.
He rarely is injured.
WTF is missing. Not much, get used to it.

If I were Livramento I wouldn't take the risk to compete at RB with that current version of Nunes. 2 years later maybe.

That quote from Pep was way out of order wasn’t it, fair play to Nunes for taking it on the chin.
