Dias wasn't with us in 17/18, Otamendi was our #1 CB as Kompnay (17 starts) and Stones (16 starts) had injury hit seasons that made us move for Laporte (9 starts) in Jan
I think Gvardiol and Dias is not far off that level, obviously we dont have Walker but at least we've added a strong LB on paper in Ait-Nouri
Walker - Otamendi - Kompany - Delph
Vs
Nunes - Dias - Gvardiol - Ait Nouri
If you had to pick 4 players from those 2 back-lines you're taking 2 from each
Actually, put down on paper bluntly like that, I find myself, with some surprise, hesitating.
Our current back four should, potentially, be better than that original one. I regard Rúben as a better central defender than Otamendi ever was (even with Rúben's weaknesses) and he's certainly a better leader. I'll say it — the best central defence pairing we've had since the takeover has been prime Rúben with prime Johnny. That was a magnificent pairing.
Delph was a much more limited player in terms of what he could do on the ball than Ait Nouri (apparently, it's early days) or even Gvardiol. Prime Walker on the face of it looks clearly stronger than Nunes. But Kyle was never the best in either his ball play or his passing. He was a tremendous athlete, who could overlap or underlap at will in his best years and put good crosses over to create havoc. In defence, he would be quite often skinned, but had the speed to turn and actually catch the winger up, put in a good tackle, because he's a bit of a unit physically, and take the ball back off him. Nunes will always be suspect on those grounds (and I still don't think he's a prime right-back) but he can do more with the ball, and I was impressed by how he learnt about the trade on the job last season, and went from being a complete liability to someone who knows his weaknesses and is therefore more careful to not put himself in a position where they'll be nakedly exposed.
By the way, I have never understood the utter contempt that Rico seems to get on this forum. He is
not a proper right back, but he's a decent footballer (Pep seems to think so, too, incidentally). If we get a prime right back, a proper one, his days will be numbered, because he's simply not good enough to play at the level we require in midfield. Nunes, I think, will become back-up at right-back. And that will be it for Rico. I believe he'll get a decent PL team to go to. Wish him well. Seems a very nice lad, too.
