This guy is not human. How the fuck did he make that tackle in the box without scoring an own goal? Best CB in the world by a mile
Things are going his way now. Just like Stones. One day it'll change and everything will go wrong. We, I, need to be patient then. He is just human.

Essentially saying Napoli didn't reduce their asking price so a deal was never that close. But Koulibaly was our primary target. We just eventually moved on to Kounde and then Dias because of the valuation issue. If KK was available for 55m + Otamendi, he'd be playing for us right now.
I don’t think we even thought Dias was an option until benfica failed to qualify for the champs league. As soon as this happened we moved quickly and secured Dias. Truth is no one knows if Dias was the top choice but it’s fair to assume once we knew he was available for a good price he was right at the top of our list If not the very top

Good point & something to bear in mind for the future.

I remember a YouTube video doing the rounds when we first bought him where he conducted a similar style last ditch tackle which went horribly wrong & ended up being an own goal.

Gotta take the rough with the smooth & Stones is one hell of an example where patience is a virtue!

So help me out here. Was it the club looked at Dias, decided he was great but too expensive and then moved on? And then got lucky with Benfica getting knocked out of the CL and having not signed another CB, gladly took the opportunity to sign him?

Also it begs the question, who was the 1st choice if neither him nor Koulibaly? Koundé? Carlos? Soyuncu? Someone else?
Koulibally was the first choice. Anything else is revisionist history. So much so that when we signed Dias the internet introduction guys screwed up and forgot to change the name from Koulibally bro Dia's in one of their blasts.

Dia's was not available at the time we were looking for a CB. So it makes sense he wasn't first choice. But thank God for our good luck. I hated the Koulibally chase and was glad we failed. 29 year old coming off a down season is never the best choice of who to buy.

Kounde looked decent, albeit small for a Centerback. I was glad when the Dias news broke. His age and pedigree ( Captain, on the NT and only 23) all suggested to me that at worst he'd be good. I'm glad he has shattered both my lowest and highest expectations.

After his entry interview, I was sold. He was just too intense to not be a good player. :)

Watched the entire match again. He is just so focused. That block saved a certain goal, he anticipated the pass and slid before it had even been made which meant his foot was there exactly when needed. He then applied a toe poke to take it away from goal, all at 100mph. Luck? I don't think so.
