Bull in a China shop at times. While he gets blocks in, he needs to stay on his feet more. The level of overcommitment is sometimes very expensive, as it was last night.

I’m not sure if he personally gets emotionally OVER hyped for big games, but I feel like his performances in those games pale in comparison to lesser games.

I think he carries a fair amount of liability in the way he plays, and it was on show last night.

He is not very fast, which can leave him stranded when he does overcommit, especially outside the box, and it is only the “last ditch tackle” that often bales him out.

In addition, unless it’s a 5-10 yard pass to an open man, his more direct forward passing is poor for a passing team like City.

None of this is to suggest he isn’t a decent player, but I feel like he is FAR from the finished article.

The manner in which he blew into town has created a very positive narrative around him with City fans, but I think time has begun to show his weaknesses. Some of those were on display last night.

Harsh....he was leading from the front with his blocks and tackles and his vocal encouragement. This lad is our best Captain since Vinny,he should not be exempt from criticism but lets have some perspective.

As for the penalty,it wasnt one.
Ruben Dias is our best defender. People have short memories. He came in last season when our defense was shambles and instantly changed it and formed a formidable partnership with Stones. We need to build the team around him, Bernardo, Rodri, Foden and Haaland. There's a good reason he was made 3rd captain ahead of KdB and Walker.

Haaland, Mbappe, Salah, Neymar and Messi were all handled by Dias and Stones. We went on a 22 game winning run with those two as our CB partnership last season.

The problem is his partner Laporte, he doesnt trust him so hes always on edge when he plays with him or Ake to an extent. He tries to hard to provide cover or enter duels he doesn't need to, his mate Cancelo doesn't help either, hes either wandering up field or losing possession attempting risky passes.

I've been a lower league defender, trust me it's hard when you have to scream your lungs out, Marshall the defense, cover your teammates and still be a ball playing defender it's physically so demanding.

Dias has played so many games over the last year and a half, he's done well to avoid serious injury and come back sooner than expected. He looks after himself, just compare his injury record to Stones, he's always available.

Dias is still only 24. I hope we find a new CB this summer to form a long lasting partnership, Laporte is not good enough and Stones is always injured.

Of course he isnt the finished article.....but 'far from' lol......he is 24 years old and has had an injury hit season.....he was hardly going to reach the incredible heights of last season with such interruption.

He has been immense in his time here, far better than anyone predicted and expected, and he is well on course to be amongst the centre half greats.

For comparison.....VVD was still earning his stripes at Southampton at the same age.

If he needs time to develop, no biggie. However, he was lauded to high Heaven because he helped tighten a defence that let a hatful in in one game!

He is good at certain aspects of defending, but lacks some key aspects: not dominant in the air, doesn’t have pace, goes to ground too easily…and this is at 24, as you noted.

Am I being hypercritical? I don’t think so!

I think both Stones & Laporte are better defenders. What Dias has is a commanding presence. That’s far from enough and he needs to improve.

To me, it is noteworthy that most City fans believe we have an awesome CB contingent of 4 top players, yet we can be impotent against top CFs.

I’m not saying he is shit! I am saying there’s LOTS of work to be done to add better defensive qualities to his portfolio.
