He’s had way too much football over the past few seasons. What he really needs now is a proper rest!
CWC will steal that from him now!
It’ll be interesting to see how we start the new season.

I’m hoping that we play the players we’re selling in the CWC more so we have some players rested.

I think giving our players some rest would be a smart move—they genuinely need it. I might be wrong, but I doubt the players who are on their way out will be as motivated to go all-in for the Club World Cup, even with the potential £100M in prize money on the line. Of course, they’re professionals, so maybe they’d see it as a final hurrah and go all out. Then again, the club might be reluctant to risk injuries to those they're planning to sell, which could complicate any transfers. In the end, I imagine the CWC will serve more as a preseason for the remaining squad and new signings. Either way, I agree, it’ll definitely be interesting to see how we kick off the new season!

Thought Dias did ok tonight with a couple of important blocks/challenges.
He is definitely the leader in the group, so should now start next season as club captain.
With Stones always knackered, we need Reuben's big match experience to start the season...
Nahh, he’s not lived up to his potential.

I’m sure he works hard on himself in the gym, possibly slightly distracted by women, but he doesn’t lead the team, he doesn’t drive us forward, he doesn’t seem to be comfortable on the ball, with our system, with knowing how to direct our game in the pitch. He gets some good blocks in, and is committed in those situations, but he doesn’t command very much and doesn’t exude confidence or give it to those around him.

I hope it’s a form thing and he can really get up to Vinny’s standards, but I’m disappointed that he’s not there currently.

Not lived up to his potential? He’s played a crucial role in us winning multiple trophies and a treble. He’s been brilliant - no idea what you’ve been watching for the last 5 years

The expectation levels with our players are becoming impossible to meet.

Personally, I would say that he has lived up to his potential, it's just that he's nowhere near as good a player as John Stones or Nathan Ake. He's on the same level as Akanji for me. He's certainly no Vincent Kompany.

In my opinion, like Akanji, Dias is a very good defender, prone to the odd error (who isn’t?), but not a leader.

Khusanov and Reis are /:should be the future at City. The Stones and Ake replacements. As soon as they can speak and understand English, they'll start to be more regular features in our defence.

So you/we always thought he was going to be about as good as Akanji?? I think most people felt he was bought as the VK replacement.

Agreed. I think people need to watch the last few minutes in Istanbul.

You're not making sense. I didn't say that I "always thought he was going to be about as good as Akanji".

During his first season, I thought we had a diamond on our hands. Unfortunately, he's never kicked on since (in my opinion), and I'd put him well behind Stones, Ake, Khusanov, abd Gvardiol in 'quality' terms. As I say, I see him on a par with Akanji... a very good back-up for rotation, but not a guaranteed starter.

As for replacing Kompany, I believe that John Stones is a better footballer than Vinny, but doesn’t have the leadership qualities. That's where we're lacking as a squad - no genuine leaders.

Ruben Dias isn't anywhere near Vinny's quality as a defender or as a leader, regardless of the 'fist pumping' and 'high fiving' every tackle or block, which some fans seem to think is evidence of leadership skills.

The future ? Who knows how Khusanov and Reis will turn out ?

Good grief.

Don't do drugs kids.

Viana and Guardiola signed them for the future. You and many others have been telling everyone to 'trust in Pep' since he arrived... suddenly you don't trust him...?

Dias is this season's Laporte... He'll be looking over his shoulder as better players settle in and emerge as competition.

Does he have it in him to up his game? I don't think so, but it's up to him to be more consistent.

This is like comparing two of my children, but Dias has won (and been central to winning) as many premier league titles in five seasons as Vinny won in the eleven years he was with us. Before you even count European successes (two finals, one victory). So I don't know what standards we are talking about here.
