By that logic, could you not also say it would also be extremely disrespectful, arguably more so, to Ederson, our treble winning goalkeeper to drop him presumably for an error in the previous game only to see his replacement make a bigger error in the next game and yet he doesn't then receive the same treatment?

I didn’t see this bigger error.

I’m also nervous about calling up patient backup players with the attitude “one game to excel or you’re out”. That’s how we’ve lost a few in the past.

I see what you’re saying, though, and it’s a situation where one or other of them is going to feel slighted.
