35 years of hurt...your top five low points

You're right. Chelsea had a dismal 80s caused by the money spent on building their new stand at the time. The difference between City & Chelsea was that City's fans, in the main, stayed loyal. City's attendances never plumetted in the way Chelsea's (and Leeds and Newcastle) did.

The aftermath of that stoke game was the worse for me, not just the realisation of 3rd division football, the mad dash back to the train station without getting murdered or arrested was as bad.

Luton I was only 6/7 at the time and couldnt understand why that man was jumping around like a muppet.

Watching the pitch invasion in the spud's QF, we really did think it was finally going to be our year

That 2nd Gillingham goal

Watching us dick about in the corner for the draw to send us down, how half the crowd knew other scores and the bench didnt shows what a shambles we were.

Notts county in the cup,

1. Relegation to third tier after beating Stoke..My sunday Football league team had just won the cup. So we watched it in the pub and was well pissed up. I actually cried like a baby that day and it lasted for hours..I really thought that was it for City and we would never recover.

2. Gillingham with 2 mins to go and 2-0 dowm - again thought this club has just blown it's last chance to get back to the big time and we would end up consigned to the bottom divisions for years to come.

3. West ham at home 1996 i think in the FA cup quarter final got beat 2-1. i really thought our name was on the cup that year. I think we had to play Sat in the prem then Monday night in the cup. The team was shattered and Samaras had got injured on the sat.

4. All three injury time loses to the rags last year.

5. Getting beat by Spurs last season to miss out on the Champs league.

I agree with the comments about Luton. No matter how low we subsequently dropped that day in 83 was the first time I felt we had ever 'failed'. Losing the 81 final replay was bad, but it was still an FA Cup final. Losing in 83 meant we were dropping out of the top division for the first time in my life.

The cause of the 83 relegation stretched back to the ridiculous spending of the late 70s/early 80s and the return of Allison when Tony Book - and Bill Taylor - had City on course for possible success in Europe (and had enjoyed extremely good league campaigns).

Everything that followed 1983 had been caused to some degree by the events of 1978-1983. City were always playing catch-up and struggling with finances.

It still hurts some of us eh Gary?

Painfully! But at least it's in the past now.

I remember seeing an old man crying next to me. He said, "that's it. I'll never see City win owt again!" Working out his age, he'd probably be 110 now, so you never know!

What also hurts is that I was sat at the front of the North Stand to the Kippax side of the goal. It was the first time I ever saw myself on TV - typical! Captured on TV at the moment that hurt most.

All the shit things that have happened to us are what makes us the supporters today. You see Chelsea, the Scum, Liverpool, Arsenal, they've never had to experience what we've experienced and that is why we're the best supporters in the world bar none!!!

City Till I Die!!!

Chelsea have had some tough times and they were on the verge of bankruptcy before Abramovic stepped in

Yeh I understand that but my point was that the Chelsea fans of my age (26) have never had to experience their side being relegated to the 3rd tier of English Football. We were on the verge of going bust before the Shiekh took over weren't we?

I am only 19 so won't remember most of the ones here.

Recently mine are probably in no paticular order...

-Gillingham going 2-0 up at wembley
-Doncaster knocking us out of the cup at their old ground (On pens i think)
-Manchester city 0 Wigan athletic 1 (freezing cold and we had only seen 8 goals at home all season under pearce, this whilst united won the league. school was hell)
-Manchester city 0/1 West Ham 2, quarter final of FA cup. really thought we could do it. Got let down, Dean Ashton striking twice.
-Yoonited 4 City 3 (Owen you ****)

Oh forgot Blackburn away in the quarter final as well. Blues fans fighting each other in the terrace and everyone calling for Pearces head.

-- Wed May 25, 2011 10:09 am --

I remember Charlton away under Pearce also, we lost 1-0. Hit the post about 6 times.

I was throwing a party that night as my mam and dad were on their jollies. It had never entered my head we wouldn't get the draw we needed so it seemed a good idea at the time.

I rang my girlfriend up at the time, told her i wouldn't be there and left her to it! Spent all night drowning my sorrows in the Cyprus Tavern.

1) TWO Fukkin fluke Liverpool goals Maine Road (Christmas time) and again at Anfield (Easter time) that cost us the title in 1977

2) Wembley replay 81- if Gow hadn't already been booked he would have dropped Villa on the halfway line.

3) Relegation v Luton still hate that club with a passion and was so pleased for Wimbledon.

4) Gillingham at Wembley - wrongly at the time thought Horlock goal was just another piss take sent from above!

5) Rags three last minute victories last season- all probably unjust!

1) Luton

2) Halifax away in the FA Cup

3) Bury at Maine Road

4) York in the old Third division

5) Gillinghams 2cnd at Wembley

1) Peter Swales

2) Relegation vs Luton - words can't describe the feeling

3) 2-0 down vs Gillingham - devestated and thinking "that's it, we're finished as a club, we'll never recover from that"

4) 81 Cup Final + Replay - gutted for Tommy H; horrified at the defence vs Ricky Villa

5) Alan Ball - football genius

Special Mentions:

a) Frank Clarke - I just want to play guitar

b) 0-0 draw vs Tranmere away - freezing cold day and the dawning realisation we were shit, truly, truly shit
