35 years of hurt...your top five low points

A good five there, Dave.

Mine would be

1. Luton in '83.The start of a 25 year nightmare.

2.Spurs 2-4 in '93. A little bit of many City fans died that day. So many of us were convinced our name was on the Cup .

3. The 2-3 loss to Utd in '93. Mainly because it was so obvious it was coming even at 2-0 to us.

4. Our loss away to Lincoln in Div 2 in 1998/9. I lived on the south coast at that time and I drove midweek to this fixture (and back that night) and started to question my sanity on the way home.

5. The Stuart Pearce era. I started to fall a little bit out of love with City during this period, which was hard to take. I assumed it was because I was getting older or possibly world weary but on reflection I think the biggest factor was the air of decay and defeat that pervaded the club at this time. Does this make me a plastic JCL?

I questioned this too. Often found myself thinking is it really worth it, not scoring a goal at home from New Years Day was horrendous. This is the only period being a City fan where I used to genuinely dread going to the game, sure there's the odd game in every season where you'd think 'there's nothing for us here today' but that season it was every game. When he put David James up front instead of Macken, I honestly could not believe what I was seeing.

Sort of puts taking Adebayor off and bring Zabaleta on when 2-1 down into perspective. I've never forgiven Stuart Pearce for what he tried to do to us.

Only being 22, I won't have the same low's as a lot of others, however, in my years of being a city fan there have been some pretty low moments...

1. My first game was the 1996 game against Liverpool when we drew, but went down, a sign of what was to come for the next few years really

2. Losing at home to Oxford (think 1998)- don't know why, I just really remember that game and has stuck with me.

3. The second goal against Gillingham, people around me were leaving, and everyone around me was just deflated/ hating city. Having said that, most people soon came running back in, and it soon turned into one of the greatest memories. That drive back will always be one of my favourite memories; stopping at service stations and everyone was City, just hugging each other etc, was amazing.

4. The late United goals last season; they are recent and fresh in the memory. Obviously never as 'low' as it has been with city, but was still horrible

5. The Pearce season in general, he was great when he took over from Keegan for the final 11 games of that season, but awful the next. The FA Cup quarter final against West Ham when Mussampa scored that volley left me pretty deflated.

turning up with 3,000 others to watch us play Mansfield in the 90's

no longer being able to buy the fanzines.....

no longer swaying with the Kippax back and forth in the 70's and 80's

seeing absolutely loyal blues who followed us everywhere no longer being able to attend for financial reasons eg been made redundant or have families and other committments that preclude them from coming all the time, life moves on I guess.........

Good point about blues who followed City through all the shit years
that for differing reasons cannot now attend,i know plenty of them
...and if they managed to get a game some on here would probably label them plastic jcls

I believe that you need to experience those lows to appreciate the highs as a football fan, and that's why the ecstasy on the faces on all those blues in Wembley, the tears, the dancing, was so much more intense than fans of most successful clubs will ever know.

That to me sums up why the FA Cup this year means more to us than the 19th League does to Unit fans. They’ve been spoilt over the last 20 years and don’t know what failure feels like. Where as we on the other hand know what failure feels like and appreciate any bit of success we get.

Top 5 Lows:

1. The 100 mile drive home after every home game during the Stuart Pearce goal drought. Only time I’ve ever questioned renewing my season ticket.

2. Having to leave Maine Road even though I knew it’s what the Club had to do.

3. Relegation to the 2nd division.

4. The feeling I got when I heard Joe Royle had been sacked despite getting us back to back promotions. Thankfully I was proven wrong and the following season was my favourite season ever following City.

5. Getting locked in Old Trafford for half an hour after the League Cup Semi Final and having to watch them lot gloat and play that shit through the PA system.

only 16 so not really the same as most but here is mine...

1) all of the rags injury time winners last year

2) the whole stuart pearce era

3) 2 away wins in hughes' first season !

4) missing out on champions league to spurs

5) blackburn away in the cup

1) Malcolm Allison selling Owen and Barnes, what is he doing to us?
2)Equaliser in '81 final, didn't thnk we could win it after that and wsa doubting the clubs ability to organise.
3) Relegation in '83, we are slipping
4) Selling Trevor Francis Niall Quinn and Gary Flitcroft We cant afford to keep star players / our best players / our home grown talent.
5) The statement that there is no money to but anyone after Ben Haim, Oh dear it looks like the last few years of sporadic rise is over and we are really stuffed, thought we could do a Leeds at that point.

5) in a way was the worst as there seemed to be real hope before then but it was completely dashed and I doubted if I would see City rise in my lifetime.
Darkest before the dawn however.

I fit into that category - i now tend to pick games to go to (usually away) rather than go to all of them.

Some of my lows:
1. Birmingham away (can't remember when) lost 6-0? Three players lined up behind the ball for a free kick - all three ran over it! Nobody left to take it
2. Leaving Wembley at 2-0 down to Gillingham
3. Getting allocated a supposedly like for like season ticket seat for the first season at COMS.
4. Having loyalty points reduced when i was unable to renew my season ticket. Realised at this time (along with the shite on the pitch) that my love for football had diminished.
5. Realising that when the old man passed away, i would never be able to share in the enjoyment if we went on to win anything.

Time to cheer up me thinks!

You could have a Top 5 of the Stuart Pearce era alone.

1) The SWP sale.
2) The Blackburn FA Cup game.
3) No goals at home after New Year.
4) Sitting at one game, cold, bored and completely disinterested then falling asleep.
5) The last home game against the rags when we were safe but still kept all eleven behind the ball and refused to attack them.
