37 Away Games Without A Win Run Ends…

Paul Stewart got a hattrick but one was taken away for a deflection after the game, so he had to wait until the Hudds game.

Varadi was the only player with a hattrick until that point v Stoke, the only 3-0 home hattrick after that took 21 years, Robinho v Stoke again.
Lakey scored the first that somehow got credited to Stewart in the media and White got one, if I remember correctly. If you watch the interview after the 10-1 with a young Martin Tyler, Paul Stewart touches on this. I’ll see if I can find it for you.

Don’t know for sure if this is true but my mate always used to reckon that the first leg of this tie was the only time City ever lost a game at Maine Road to a 4th Division team.

What I do know was it was pretty much the game that did for Eric Nixon’s City career.

My other recollection was that Wolves had rioted at Scarborough on the first day of the season and were on a ban for away fans. But they’d come down earlier in the week and the ticket office had happily sold them about a thousand for the North Stand.
I recall a very small number in the north stand but nowhere near 50 nevermind 1000

Going a bit off topic here but it’s another reason why modern day goalscoring records are harder to break than before Premier League days.

Giggs is still credited with that OG in his first derby. Shearer would claim anything that went within two yards of him. If last nights game was pre Sky days, Haaland would have been credited with a hatrick.

Currently on a run of (I think) 22 away PL games without defeat (Spurs on the opening day of last season). If we can go unbeaten on our travels this season, we'll beat that landmark.

I used to think that too. It certainly was at its height but since then had lots of travelling Blues from 70s/early 80s talk about 79-80. My first away game wasn’t until Stoke 81 unfortunately.
You surprise me Gary. I always had the idea that you'd been going to aways long before 1981.

Not saying you're an FOC, just that when it comes to City, you seem to have been 'part of the furniture' for years!

;-)

I remember that run. Went to majority of those games thinking is this the one to break the cycle.

Was entertaining 87/88 with Varadi and Stewart, plus the youth team nucleus. Think that is still my best in a season for attending league games. The train special was superb arrangement.
