GARETH BARRY revealed Manchester City kept their FA Cup partying in check — as they could have more reasons to celebrate by Sunday.
Roberto Mancini's men now have a real chance of landing third place and automatic Champions League qualification after Arsenal's latest slip-up against Aston Villa.
The cock-a-hoop Cup winners return to action tonight with a re-run of Saturday's final against Stoke at Eastlands.
Victory will see City leapfrog the Gunners into third place with a final-day clash at Bolton to come.
Barry admits it was tempting to go out and celebrate after clinching a top-four spot and a first major trophy in 35 years.
But the England ace said: "We've had to be careful with the celebrations because of Tuesday.
"And we all had an eye on the Arsenal-Villa game to see whether there was any chance we could get third. It'll be a strange feeling for both teams having just played a final. But there's a chance of getting third, so we'll be out to win."
Barry made the controversial move to City from Villa two years ago to challenge for silverware and play in the Champions League.
He admitted: "It's been an unbelievable week. This club and its fans have waited so long for a trophy. So to get Champions League football and the FA Cup is a perfect week, so we're really enjoying it.
"I've played at Wembley a lot but the last two against Manchester United and Stoke have been unbelievable."
Finishing third means City would avoid possible awkward qualifiers with the likes of Bayern Munich or Lyon.
Going straight into the group stages is a big carrot for Mancini's side due to the millions it would bring.
Defender Micah Richards said: "Getting third place is important. We know we could get the likes of Bayern Munich in the qualifiers if we finish fourth."
Meanwhile, City coach David Platt reckons the battle for third place illustrates why the club have to get over their obsession with neighbours United.
On May 1, news of Alex Ferguson's men slipping up at Arsenal was greeted with cheers by the crowd gathering to watch City take on West Ham.
Platt said: "What we will get eventually is a mentality change among the supporters that the be-all and end-all isn't necessarily to outdo United, it is to win trophies.
"What reinforced that for me was when we were playing West Ham the other Sunday and they lost to Arsenal, a big cheer went round the ground.
"You can understand that is borne out of the rivalry between the clubs.
"But in the cold light of day, you should think 'We can get third place if Arsenal drop points'. What is important is not so much derby matches but trophies."
The FA Cup win and Champions League qualification has secured manager Mancini's future.
And David Silva insisted: "I hope Mancini continues. He put us in the Champions League and won a trophy and now we hope next year we will be better with him."
