It's been a while since I've updated my personal database and he's been everything we'd thought he'd be. We were all frustrated at how little minutes he was getting at the start of the season. I suggested that we just wait and see how things play out because I've been updating the database fairly regularly since 2016/2017 and I have a good grasp on how Pep handles his rotations and game/minute distributions. I told
@twosips we'd be looking at around 1800 minutes once it's all said and done and while it'll be tough to surpass that... and probably a bit ambitious on my part seeing how it was Dave's final season it's still possible. Here's a quick look at his progression since Guardiola arrived.
2016/17 Totals: No appearances.
2017/18 Totals: 328 min, 0 goals, 1 assist, 328 minutes per Goal Contribution, 10 Apps, 3 Starts.
2018/19 Totals: 1112 mins, 7 goals, 2 assists. 123.56 Minutes per Goal Contribution, 26 Apps, 11 Starts.
2019/20 Totals: 1425 minutes, 7 goals, 9 assists, 89.06 Minutes per Goal Contribution, 33 Apps, 14 Starts.
Total: 2865 minutes, 14 goals, 12 assists, 110.19 min per goal contribution, 69 app, 28 starts.
That's effectively a full seasons worth of game time and wow...talk about special numbers.
For comparison here's some numbers under Guardiola...
KDB: 13298 min, 38 goals, 72 assists, 120.89 min per contribution.
Dave: 12828 min, 33 goals, 47 assists, 160.35 min per contribution.
Bernardo: 9957, 30 goals, 34 assists, 155.58 min per contribution.
Raz: 14820, 85g, 56a, 105.11 min per contribution.
Mahrez: 5515, 24g, 25a, 112.55 min per contribution.
Personally, I think he's already of Bernardo in that Central/Wide hybrid position and he's just getting started. I suppose they don't really overlap all too much as Bernardo can rotate with Mahrez/KDB on the right with Phil rotating with Gundogan/Raz on the left.
Ideally we'd sign Dave for one more season and then Phil can be rotated out with Dave/Gundogan in that free 8 role. We log about ~3500 minutes a season out of our midfield players and if we take that route instead of signing somebody like Aouar we can get Phil somewhere around 2500-3000 minutes which is right where his trajectory should ideally be. It's not out of the realm of possibility that he's ready for 4,000 like Bernardo gets either.
Depending on how often he plays wide and if he can approach 3,000 minutes we're possibly looking at a possible 30 goal contribution season from him next year. I don't think that 110 minutes per contribution is sustainable long term if he logs the majority of his games centrally, but hell you never know. The sky's absolutely the limit for this kid!
