#47 | Phil Foden - 2020/21 Performances

I love Phil, but some of what I read about how outrageous it is he's been dropped strikes me as very odd:

Might any of these have SOMETHING to do with Foden being dropped?

1) Did Foden have good, or poor performances against Scotland and Croatia (from my observation as he was taken off)? He was good in moments against Scotland but the team was overall poor. His showing against Croatia was hard to remember because he seemed not present.

2) Is Foden an experienced, highly relied upon senior player that the players in the team (especially those behind him in the squad) would be as unlikely to openly question Southgate compared to respected leaders in the team like Kane or even Raz?

3) The competition for places in attack: Raz performing well in the tournament and Kane being clearly undroppable whilst Foden is not exactly a senior player in the team with multiple years experience can easily mean his place was MOST up for grabs in attack.

4) On competition again: The reality that someone of Sancho's level didn't play 1 single minute before the last game whilst Foden started 2 and others were crying for he OR Grealish to start as well. How can that work with Kane and Sterling in the team and remain responsible defensively? Someone won't start.

5) On competition again: Grealish's form and the team's play improving after he came on against Scotland and then his performance next game against Czech Republic next game compared to Foden.

6) On how competition and tactical decisions based on opponent are at play: Even after Grealish had 2 strong performances in a row HE WAS DROPPED against Germany. Sancho also didn't play.

7) On competition again: Who else has more game time than Sancho? This lad called Saka, considered ANOTHER top attacking talent (I wonder if some of our fans even realise how good he is) started against Germany after a good performance against the Czech Republic. Dropped after a poor showing against Germany.
On competition, Simple, you drop Rice who isnt very good and you play four attacking players.

I still see foden playing a big role for England. He could easily score the winner in a final if he only gets 5 mins on the pitch. Either way this will spur him on next season to be better

After watching Pedri last night I really hope Foden moves back into midfield next season. I know Pep doesn’t quite fully trust him there, but at some stage he’s just going to have to do it.

It’s mount or foden and mount is southgates “Guy” seems Southgate has made it pretty clear that it be either Sancho or Saka on the right and if he makes a sub tonight let’s see if foden gets on the pitch if not he is going to a bit part of any for the next few years unless injuries..

Foden hasn't done anything wrong in the game he had played in but there are plenty of opportunties in the future

To me it Saka is the problem. I can understand if Sancho, Grealish even Rashford playing . But this young man should not be starting instead of Sancho, Grealish, Rashford or Foden . It doesn't make any sense.

I hope he gets another chance. Really does feel like he's been shafted because he got a yellow card which doesn't really make sense.

I'm not sure about that, i think it's more Foden or Sterling at the moment.

Foden is more suited on the left side and his performances or us mean't Sterling couldn't get a game.

Sterling is one of Southgate's guys too and he was given a chance for England and has taken it and is un-droppable at the moment and because, as you say, there are more natural options on the right, Phil can't get a game

What will be interesting for us and England is to see what happens if Grealish joins.

Will Pep play both Foden and Grealish on the left and move Sterling back to the right?
I think it's his best position because he can run at defenders and cross, pass or shoot without having to check back inside.

yeah good point but who did Southgate put on the right and move Sterling on the right? Also when foden played the the two games not once did foden get the luxury to by Southgate to switch to the left and move Sterling to the right also didn’t get the luxury of Sancho or Mount of going anywhere they wanted foden was stuck on the right never moved! Southgate for me has his team his player favourites and foden ain’t one!

But if Saka doesn't play there's nobody from The Arsenal
Emirates are big FA sponsors
