He's obviously not as good as Messi nor will he ever be so, but like Messi he has that ultra rare ability of being a fantastic direct threat whilst being a very 'Pep' player. I'm struggling to think of many more active players that could fit that description too.

Sounds obvious to say now but I and many others were wrong to lose patience with Pep's gradual easing in of Phil to the first team. You can still see him almost unnecessarily demanding a pass to feet throughout games but when he's in possession he's so much more calm and is more varied in his tempo rather than trying to be direct all the time. That and the fact that he's so versatile. He's always been comfortable coming short for the ball but recently, particularly against Brentford, he slips between and behind defenders like an experienced poacher.

That's a huge part of the utter beauty of the guy's play.
When you can vary the timing of your effort, it throws people for a compete loop.

Watch master musicians and you can see how they occasionally vary the tempo while keeping the overall rhythm of the song within the satisfying score that made it so enjoyable.

It's because they see the whole picture in the moment and can play with it to create something new, yet equally as beautiful as what everyone was expecting.
